What is an IED?An Improvised Exploding Device (IED) is a devicethat contains an initiator that, when activated, can potentially injure or even kill anyone or anything within itsrange. These devices are explosive and could possiblycontain nails, ball bearings, toxins, chemicals or radioactivematerial. They are very difficult to detect because theycome in many different shapes and sizes. Some of thesedevices can be disguised as something as small as a sodacan so it is important to be cautious when in the vicinity of one. IEDs can utilize commercial or military explosives, homemade explosives, or military ordnance and ordnancecomponents. Unfortunately these devices are becomingmore and more sophisticated so there is a need for moreinnovative ways to detect them.Common Types of IED’s:Package – Take the form of packages, munitions, etc.Vehicle – Usually located beneath cars so they are not aseasily seen before detonated.Suicide bombers – Devices are typically sown into vests, belts, or clothing and usually worn on men and children.

Ways of Detecting IED’s:One way to notice if an IED is present is to haveknowledge of routes taken. By knowing routes and the areaif anything seems out of place or suspicious in the area thensoldiers should know to approach the area with caution. Also, having knowledge of your route also helps one knowhow to flee from an area if an IED were to detonate.Another sign that an area may contain an IED is anarea that looks recently dug up. Any kind of mounds of dirt, cracked asphalt and concrete are just a few signs to look for. Also if the area already has already been hit by an IED,who’s to say that there still isn’t another around? One more way to get a hint that there may be somesuspicious activity going on in the area is to watch how thelocal inhabitants in a given area are acting. Most localsknow where an IED is placed, but will not warn soldiers of the danger. Common things to look notice are certain areasthat are being avoided in a local area, people on roof topswatching for soldiers and convoys, and people on cell phones or walkie talkie’s. These are common things towatch for before exploring an area. One way to detect if IED’s are present would be to usea remote controlled machine with a camera to scope out anarea. If something in an area appears suspicious, one cansend out the robot to check it out and determine if the areais safe or not. This would minimize the risk of soldierslosing their lives and including the team that is sent in todeactivate such devices.
