Global education
is a pedagogical phi-losophy that aims to raise awareness aboutlocal and global issues and encourage em-powerment. Global education emphasizesthe interconnections between issues andprinciples and encourages the developmentof emotional, social and theoretical skillsneeded in order to lead a responsible andengaged life .In order to support the process and peda-gogy of global education, Class Afloat hasestablished the West Island College Inter-national Global Education Association.This not for profit organization wasgranted status as a society this spring andaims to develop globally mindedpractices both at home and abroad.This program promotes awareness,stewardship and responsibility forcommunity, the living environmentand social justice.Community-based programs developed,delivered and hosted by the Global Educa-tion Association include:

Monthly documentary film series fo-cused on global issues

Public workshops and seminars onglobal issues, sustainability, and com-munity

International service projects focusedon health, sanitation, environment,micro-finance and journalism for hu-man rights

Chronicling the Class Afloat Community and Documenting the active engagement of youth
The warm weather and sunshine has broughtenergy and enthusiasm to the Lunenburgcommunity. This spring, the Class Afloatstudents and the local community have beenbusy taking advantage of the warm weatherand the sunshine now that the freezing rainand snowy days are long forgotten.The Grade 12 students have been particu-larly active in recent weeks preparing for thestudent-directed talent show known as“Loonie Tunes”, volunteering with localhealth services, the Rotary Club and theyacht club and participating in outdoor ac-tivities such as track and field, ultimateFrisbee, a kayak trip and hikes along themany beaches of the South Shore.The students have a few more weeks tolook forward to and will fill the upcomingweekends with a trip to the regional track and field meet in support of the senior boysrelay team, a visit to the WolfvilleAppleblossom festival and the Bay of Fundy, volunteering at the provincial 5Kroad race and the end of semester canoetrip.
