FRIARS IN THE NIT
... The Providence College men’s basketball team will makeits first appearance in the National Invitation Tournament (NIT) since 2007 whenthe Friars play Miami (Fla.) on Wednesday, March 18 at 7:00 p.m. at the Dunkin’Donuts Center in Providence. The Friars, who finished the regular season in eighth place in the BIG EAST with a 10-8 mark, have registered a 19-13 record overall.Providence posted a 1-1 mark at the BIG EAST Tournament as the Friars defeatedDePaul, 83-74, in the Second Round and were defeated by fifth-ranked Louisville,73-55, in the Quarterfinals. Providence will be making its 18th appearance in the NIT. The Friars, who won the NIT in 1961 and 1963, have registered a 30-18 mark all-time in NIT games. In the Friars’ most recent NIT game, Providence was defeatedat Bradley, 90-78, in overtime in the First Round on March 14, 2007.

FRIARS VERSUS MIAMI
... Thursday’sgame will mark the 20th all-time meeting between the Friars and former BIG EASTopponent Miami. The Friars have posted a15-14 mark all-time versus the Hurricanes,including 8-6 at home, 6-7 away and 1-1 onneutral courts. The two teams last met on November 18, 2007, when the Hurricanesdefeated the Friars, 64-58, at the Puerto RicoTip-Off in San Juan. Providence last playedMiami in the NIT on March 19, 1963, win-ning, 106-96, en route to the team’s second NIT title in three seasons. PC last won inProvidence versus Miami on February 21,2004, earning a 70-57 victory.
SCOUTING THE HURRICANES
... TheHurricanes finished the season with an 18-12record and placed ninth in the Atlantic CoastConference with a 7-9 mark. In their mostrecent game, they were defeated by VirginiaTech, 65-47, in the first round of the ACCTournament on March 12. The Hurricaneshave recorded a 3-8 mark all-time in the NITand will be making their ninth appearance inthe Tournament and first since 2006. Miamiis led by senior guard Jack McClinton. TheFirst Team All-ACC selection ranks firston the team with 19.3 ppg and 2.8 apg. Heshoots 45.5 percent (91-200) from 3-pointterritory. Junior forward Dwayne Collinsleads the Hurricanes with 7.1 rebounds per contest.
FRIARS LOOK TO EARN 20TH WINFOR FIRST TIME SINCE 2004
... TheFriars enter Wednesday’s game looking toearn their 20th win of the season. The lasttime PC had 20 wins was in 2004 when theteam posted a 20-5 mark. The Friars recordeda 10-8 mark in conference action this seasonwhich is the team’s best record in confer-ence play since the 2004 Friars registeredan 11-5 mark.
AFTER THE FIRST ROUND
...
The winner of the First Round NIT game between Provi-dence and Miami (Fla.) will face the winner of the Florida/Jacksonville game. Providencecould host a Second Round game if the Friarswin and eighth-seeded Jacksonville upsetsFlorida. PC would host the Second Roundgame on either March 19, 21 or 23 at theDunkin’ Donuts Center. If the Gators win andPC wins, the Friars will travel to Gainesvilleto play on March 20 or 23.
FRIARS POST 0-1 MARK IN 2007 NIT
...
Inthe Friars’ last appearance in the NIT, theteam posted an 0-1 mark in 2007. The Friarswere defeated in the first round by Bradley,90-78, in overtime in Peoria, Ill. Currentsenior Weyinmi Efejuku (Fresh Meadows, N.Y.) posted 28 points against the Braves.
FRIARS IN THE NIT FINAL FOUR

Since1959, Providence has made seven appear-ances in the NIT Final Four. The Friarshave finished first (1961 and 1963), runner up (1960 and 1975) and fourth (1959, 1976and 1993). PC’s seven appearances in the NIT Final Four ranks fourth overall. OnlySt. John’s (16 appearances), Bradley (eightappearances) and Dayton (eight appearances)have finished in the top four of the NIT moretimes than the Friars.
1963 NIT CLASSIC VS MIAMI...
In 1963, theFriars defeated Miami, 106-96, en route tothe team’s second NIT title in three seasons.Miami had defeated the Friars in Alumni Hallearlier in the year and Ray Flynn wantedrevenge. His 38 points proved the better of the great Rick Barry’s efforts and the Friarsmoved on, but not without some theatrics.PC watched a 19-point lead dwindle to four with 1:30 left when Barry fouled Flynn. Barryslammed the ball to the floor, got a technical,and Flynn hit three free throws to ice thegame. The contest is considered to be one of the greatest games in Friar history.
MIAMI COACH FRANK HAITH RETURNSTO THE DUNK...
Miami Head Coach Frank Haith was an assistant for Rick Barnes atTexas during the No. 18/16 Longhorns thrill-ing 79-77 victory over the Friars on January5, 2004 at the Dunkin’ Donuts Center. Texashit a game-winning shot that appeared to betaken after time had expired. However, therewas a discrepancy between the game clock and the light on the basket’s backboard, andTexas was awarded the victory.
FRIARS OWN 450 DUNK WINS...
Withthe 81-73 victory over No. 1 Pittsburgh onFebruary 24, Providence recorded its 450thall-time win at the Dunkin’ Donuts Center.The Friars have posted a 450-182 (.712)all-time mark at the arena since the team began play there during 1972-73 season.PC has recorded a 13-4 record at home thisseason. The Friars will play their first homegame in 22 days on Wednesday versusMiami (Fla.).
FRIARS 9-7 IN NIT AT THE DUNK...
The Friars have posted a 9-7 mark all-timein the NIT at the Dunkin’ Donuts Center. Inthe Friars’ last game at the Dunk, PC wasdefeated by Georgetown, 67-58, on March28, 2003.
EFEJUKU NAMED USBWA ALL-DIS-TRICT I SELECTION...
It was announcedon March 10 that Providence College senior guard Weyinmi Efejuku (Fresh Meadows, N.Y.) earned USBWA All-District I honors.It marks the first time that Efejuku earnedUSBWA All-District 1 accolades. It is thesecond honor he earned recently as he wasnamed All-BIG EAST Honorable Mentionon March 8.
FRIARS VERSUS 2009 POST SEASONTEAMS

Providence posted a 2-8 recordthis season against eight different opponentsthat will participate in the 2009 NCAA Tour-nament. PC earned wins over Pittsburghand Syracuse. The Friars recorded a 1-3mark against teams that will compete inthe NIT this season. The Friars’ lone winover a NIT participant was a victory againstRhode Island. PC was also 1-1 against teams participating in the CBI, including a winover St. John’s.
FRIARS FALL TO #5 LOUISVILLEIN BIG EAST QUARTERFINAL...
TheProvidence College men’s basketball team(19-13) lost to No. 5/5 Louisville (26-5) ina BIG EAST Tournament Quarterfinal game by a score of 73-55 on Thursday, March 12at Madison Square Garden. Senior WeyinmiEfejuku (Fresh Meadows, N.Y.) paced theFriars with 17 points, six rebounds and fivesteals. Louisville opened the game with a10-3 run and led 12-5 at the 14:58 mark of the first half. A 3-pointer by Andre McGeeextended the Cardinals lead to 10 at 17-7 andJerry Smith nailed a long 2-pointer to givethe Cardinals a 19-10 advantage with 8:07 togo in the first half. After the Cardinals took a 16-point lead with six minutes to play inthe stanza, senior Weyinmi Efejuku (FreshMeadows, N.Y.) converted a 3-point playand senior Geoff McDermott (New Rochelle, N.Y.) hit a floater to move the Friars back within 11 at 26-15. With two minutes re-maining, Efejuku converted another 3-point play, stole the ensuing inbounds pass and hittwo free throws to get PC within eight at32-24. Louisville entered intermission witha 34-24 advantage. The Friars shot only 26.5 percent (9-34) and committed 15 turnoversin the half. Providence’s pressure defensekept the Friars within 10 points, making 8steals and forcing 13 Cardinal turnovers.Efejuku led PC with 13 first-half points.Two baskets inside by senior Jonathan Kale(Mattapan, Mass.) cut the Louisville leadto six at 38-32 four minutes into the secondhalf, but he Friars could not get any closer and the Cardinals used an 8-0 run to take a51-36 lead.With five and a half minutes to play, junior Sharaud Curry (Gainesville, Ga.)hit a 3-pointer and was fouled, completingthe 4-point play to move the Friars back within 11 at 61-50. The 11-point deficitwas the closest the Friars could get for theremainder of the game. PC committed 26turnovers in the game, setting a record for the Friars in the BIG EAST Tournament.The team simply could not find its shootingtouch in the face of the Louisville defense,shooting only 33.9 percent (21-60), includ-ing 11.8 percent (2-17) from behind the

arc. Providence fell to 7-13 all-time in BIGEAST Quarternal action. Earl Clark ledLouisville with a double-double on 24 pointsand 10 rebounds. Samardo Samuels added22 points and seven rebounds.
PC PRESSURES THE CARDS...
In theFriars’ BIG EAST Quarternal loss to No.5/5 Louisville, PC used effective pressuredefense to make 14 steals and force 20 Car-dinal turnovers. The pressure led to 17 pointsoff turnovers for the Friars. Senior WeyinmiEfejuku (Fresh Meadows, N.Y.) and sopho-more Marshon Brooks (Stone Mountain,Ga.) each made ve steals for PC.
FRIARS SCORE RECORD 83 PTS...
In PC’s 83-74 second round BIG EASTTournament win over DePaul on March 11,the Friars set a school record for points in aBIG EAST Tournament game. The previousrecord of 80 was set versus St. John’s onMarch 6, 1987 and March 6, 1996.
CURRY AND EFEJUKU ECLIPSE 20POINTS IN WIN OVER DE PAUL...
Junior Sharaud Curry (Gainesville, Ga.) andsenior Weyinmi Efejuku (Fresh Meadows, N.Y.) combined for 48 of the Friars’ 83 points in the team’s BIG EAST Tournamentwin over DePaul on March 11. It marked thethird time this season that two Friars havescored 20+ points in a game. On February4, Efejuku (23), Curry (25) and senior Jeff Xavier (21) eclipsed the mark versus Vil-lanova, and Efejuku (31) and Curry (23)each posted at least 20 on February 21 versus Notre Dame.
FRIARS 2-7 VERSUS RANKEDTEAMS
... The Friars have posted a 2-7mark versus ranked opponents this season.The 100-94 win over No. 15 Syracusemarked PC’s rst win over a ranked teamsince the Friars defeated No. 13 Connecticut,85-76, on March 6, 2008. Providence’s 81-73victory over No. 1 Pittsburgh was the team’srst win over a top-10 team since a 66-56victory versus #4 Connecticut on January 24,2004 at the Hartford Civic Center.
CURRY TIES FRIAR RECORD FOR THREES AT THE BIG EAST TOUR-NEY
... Friar junior guard Sharaud Curry(Gainesville, Ga.) was 5-8 from three-pointterritory in the team’s 83-74 win over DeP-aul in the second round of the Tournament.His ve threes tied the school record for threes at the BIG EAST Tournament. Don-nie McGrath and Sheiku Kabba have alsoregistered ve threes for the Friars at theBIG EAST Tournament.
FRIARS SHOOT 50 PERCENT
... TheFriars shot 53.8-percent (28-52) in their 83-74 victory over DePaul on March 11. Itmarked the 12th time this season that thesquad has shot 50 percent or better fromthe eld. The Friars have posted a 10-2mark this season when shooting 50 percentor better from the eld. For the season, theFriars are shooting 45.3 percent (885-1,954)from the eld.
10 LEAGUE WINS HAS MEANT THENCAA TOURNEY FOR THE FRIARS
...When Providence defeated Rutgers onMarch 1, the victory gave the Friars 10 winsin BIG EAST action this season. It also wasthe sixth time in Friar history that the teamhas registered 10 or more wins in BIG EAST play. In each of the previous ve seasonsthat the Friars have recorded 10 or moreleague wins, the team has advanced to the NCAA Tournament (1987, 1994, 1997, 2001and 2004). This season marks the rst timethe Friars have recorded 10 league wins andfailed to make the NCAA Tournament.
EFEJUKU EARNS BIG EAST HON-ORABLE MENTION
... Senior WeyinmiEfejuku (Fresh Meadows, N.Y.) earned All-BIG EAST Honorable Mention accolades. Itmarks the rst time in his career that he hasearned All-BIG EAST Honorable Mentionhonors. In 18 BIG EAST games, Efejukuaveraged 16.4 ppg and 4.0 rpg.
CURRY PICKED UP PLAY IN BIGEAST

Junior Sharaud Curry (Gainesville,Ga.) missed last season with a foot injury.Curry returned to action at the start of theseason, but did not return to form until theBIG EAST started on December 31. Duringthe Friars’ 12 non-conference games, Curryaveraged 8.3 points and 4.3 assists per game.In the Friars’ 18 league games and two BIGEAST Tournament games, he averaged 14.1 points and 4.3 assists per game. Curry shot30.2 percent (13-43) from three-point terri-tory in non-conference play and 44.8 percent(43-96) from behind the arc in conferenceaction. Curry registered double gures in 16of the team’s 20 BIG EAST games. In thesecond-round tournament win over DePaul,Curry tied his season high with 25 points(8-of-14 shooting, including 5-of-8 fromthree-point territory).
EFEJUKU AVERAGING 23.0 PPG INLAST SEVEN CONTESTS
... Senior guardWeyinmi Efejuku (Fresh Meadows, N.Y.)scored 23 points in the Friars’ victory over DePaul on March 11. It marked his seventhgame this season with 20 or more points andthe 23rd time he has accomplished that inhis career. Efejuku has scored at least 20 points in ve of the last eight games. In theFriars’ last eight games, he is averaging 23.0 ppg. He recorded a season and career-high31 points against Notre Dame on February21 in Providence, R.I.
EFEJUKU LEADING THE FRIARSIN SCORING
... Senior Weyinmi Efejuku(Fresh Meadows, N.Y.) is leading the Friarsin scoring this season, averaging 15.7 ppg.In BIG EAST action, he averaged 16.4 ppgin 18 contests. He shot an impressive 41.4 percent (24-58) from behind the three-pointline in league play. Efejuku opened BIGEAST Tournament play with 23 pointsagainst DePaul on March 11 and posted ateam-high 17 points against Louisville inthe quarternals.
MCDERMOTT BREAKS FRIAR ALL-TIME STARTS RECORD
... On March 1at Rutgers, senior forward Geoff McDermott(New Rochelle, N.Y.) broke the all-timestart record at Providence College with his118th career start. McDermott has startedevery game of his career at Providence (121games). The old record of 117 career startswas held by Donnie McGrath ‘06. McDer-mott also could become the rst Friar to startevery game during a four-year career.
FREE THROWS CRUCIAL TO WINS...
In games in which the Friars have shot 70 percent or better from the free-throw linethis season, the team has posted a 9-4 record.However, PC is only 10-9 when shootingunder 70 percent.
FIVE FRIARS WITH 1,000 POINTS
...On February 10, junior guard Sharaud Curry(Gainesville, Ga.) scored 11 points in a winat USF and he became the fth Friar on thisyear’s team to register 1,000 career points.Providence is the only school in the countryto have ve players on the roster with 1,000 points. North Carolina and Marquette havefour players with 1,000 points. Seniors Wey-inmi Efejuku (1,484), Jeff Xavier (1,424),Geoff McDermott (1,117) and RandallHanke (1,060) also have scored 1,000 points.Curry has recorded 1,119 points.
FRIARS DEFEAT NO. 1 TEAM...
The81-73 win over No. 1 Pittsburgh on February24 marked only the second time in schoolhistory that the Friars have defeated a teamranked No. 1. The team’s only other victorycame on December 29, 1976 when PC de-feated Michigan 82-81, in double overtimeat the Providence Civic Center. Providenceis now 2-10 all-time against top-rankedopponents.
