THE WORSHIP OF BAALIM I ISRAEL.BASED UPO THE WORK OP DR. R. DOZY,'THE ISRAELITES AT MECCA.'BY DE. H. OORTTRASLATED FROM THE DUTCH,AD ELARGED WITH OTES AD APPEDICES,BY THE RIGHT REV. JOH WILLIAM COLESO, D.D.BISHOP OF ATAL.LODO :LOGMAS, GREE, AD CO.1865.PREFACE.THE TREATISE, which is here laid before the English reader,is one of several, by different authors, that have been occa-sioned by the publication of the remarkable researches of Pro-fessor DOZY of Leyden, into the history of the ancient Sanctuaryand Worship at Mecca, which he has traced it would seem, very distinctly to an Israelitish origin.By continental critics, generally, Prof. DOZT'S work has beencordially welcomed, not only as a specimen of most able, in-genious, and very original criticism, but as adding also con-siderably to our knowledge of the ancient affairs of Arabia, andthrowing light upon some obscure points in the early historyof Israel. It is natural, however, that, with respect to some of the details of so wide and difficult a subject, there should be roomfor difference of opinion, and, at all events, for a yet more closeand searching examination. Accordingly, some of these detailshave been submitted to a separate investigation by more thanone distinguished labourer in the field of Modern BiblicalCriticism. And, indeed, it is only in this way, by the com-

parison of results arrived at by different processes of inde-pendent enquiry, and often from different points of view, thatwe may hope at length to arrive at definite conclusions, whichmay be ranked among the certainties of Science. In the First Appendix to the Fifth Part of my Work on thePentateuch I have given some account of Professor DOZY'S re-searches : and, while engaged in passing that Part through thepress, I "have had before me several of these Treatises, especiallythose of OORT, On the Worship of Baalim in Israel, and OnIV PREFACE.Human Sacrifice in Israel) PIERSO, On the Holy Stones inIsrael, and" KUEE, On Baal-Worship in Israel, all writtenin Dutch, a language with which English scholars are not gene-rally familiar, though some of the most valuable critical worksof the present day, on the Old and ew Testaments, are only tobe read in Dutch originals. In the course of my own remarks,I have referred occasionally to the above-named writings. ButI have felt that I should best serve the interests of Truth, inrespect of the cause which I have at heart, and best satisfy theneeds and, I trust, also the desires of English students, if Itranslated one or more of them, with additional notes, eitherconfirming from my own point of view the positions of thewriter, or else, where necessary, stating my reasons for dissentingfrom any of his conclusions. With this view I have for the present selected for translationthe very able Treatise of Dr. OORT. It will be seen that hetouches all along on questions of great interest in relation to themain points of my own argument, as maintained in my Work on the Pentateuch, and especially in my Fifth Part, just pub-lished, that he starts from premisses somewhat different frommine, and arrives at somewhat different conclusions. Yet thereis substantial agreement between us; and the differences of opinion, which I have expressed in the notes, are meant ratherto qualify, than to contradict, his views, and tend, as it seemsto me, to relieve them of some difficulties, and bring them moreinto agreement with those of Prof. DOZY. At any rate, I shallbe satisfied to have thus placed more fully before Englishscholars for discussion the important questions which ProfessorDOZY and Dr. OORT have raised.J. W. ATAL.
