The Wilson County jail is overcrowded and it iscosting the county money,Sheriff Terry Ashe told thecommission. He said part of thereason for the increase is thenumber of state inmates thecounty is required to house. He told commissioners hehas transferred more than20 state prisoners to otherarea jails in the past week. The county jailonly has a capacity of 296inmates, but it has housedup to 301 in recent days which is against stateregulations, the sheriff saidin his written report tosquires. After questionsfrom the commission,Ashe explained that sincethe state is short of beds, counties are being requiredto keep felony offenders inthe local jails and to do so forless money per day than itactually costs the counties. The state paysabout $35 per day forstate prisoners, but it costsbetween $50 and $60 tohouse them, Ashe said.“But they have thepencil,” he said of stateof
fi
cials. “They write thecontracts and set the quota. We just have to obey thelaw.”Ashe also toldthe commission that civil warrants were high due atleast in part to evictions andforeclosures in the county. In other business, the commission votedunanimously to participatein the Three-Star program, which is a statewide program which helps create sustainedeconomic growth and offersopportunities to developprograms that improvethe economic appeal of thecounty.Commissionersalso approved severalrequests to make lineitem transfers in variousdepartments, including a$1million amendment toallow the Wilson Countyschool cafeteria fund to usesurplus funds generated bythe school lunch programto replace worn equipmentin several schools in thecounty. On a lighter note, the commission agreedunanimously to requestthat Tennessee Sens.Lamar Alexander and BobCorker, and U.S. Reps. BartGordon and Jim Cooperoppose any action stemmingfrom a suggestion by theEnvironmental ProtectionAgency to levy a tax on cowsas a way to curb methaneproduction. The resolution saidthe plan “appears to beoutrageous.”

I just think that inthese times of such badnews everywhere, andeveryone’s so worriedabout so much, it’s nice toknow that there’s people who still remember agreat kid who meant somuch to people and holdhim in their hearts.
