He would have beena senior this year.Graden Gaines, amuch loved and even moremissed Mt. Juliet son whodied in 2005, was honoredby his fellow classmatesand Mt. Juliet High Schoolbaseball players last week when the team played their
rst home game at the newbaseball
eld and dedicatedtheir season, accordingto one baseball mom, toGraden.“The team wantedto dedicate their seasonto him,” said Charlayne Trotter, mother of MJHS Junior ballplayer Landon Trotter. “All the boys on theteam knew him and misshim.”Graden died after along battle with a rare formof brain cancer and braintumor, but only after yearsof playing baseball in Mt. Juliet and making lifelongfriends along the way. Thatfriendship and dedication was illustrated by the MJHSbaseball team on March 11, when the team memberseach wore a jersey withGraden’s number 11, andthe MJHS baseball team won the game with a scoreof 11 – 0 against McGavockHigh School.“It’s like he was watching over them orsomething,” Trotter said.Trotter also said she was impressed with the newMJHS baseball
eld and theamount of work put into itby local education of
cials, parents and team boosters. Her husband Gregg Trotter isthe president of the BaseballBooster Club and worked tomake a baseball bat holderfor the team. She noted that noone will wear the number11 this year, in honor of Graden, and that the teamhung Graden’s baseball

cials. “They write thecontracts and set the quota. We just have to obey thelaw.”Ashe also toldthe commission that civil warrants were high due atleast in part to evictions andforeclosures in the county. In other business, the commission votedunanimously to participatein the Three-Star program, which is a statewide program which helps create sustainedeconomic growth and offersopportunities to developprograms that improvethe economic appeal of thecounty.Commissionersalso approved severalrequests to make lineitem transfers in variousdepartments, including a$1million amendment toallow the Wilson Countyschool cafeteria fund to usesurplus funds generated bythe school lunch programto replace worn equipmentin several schools in thecounty. On a lighter note, the commission agreedunanimously to requestthat Tennessee Sens.Lamar Alexander and BobCorker, and U.S. Reps. BartGordon and Jim Cooperoppose any action stemmingfrom a suggestion by theEnvironmental ProtectionAgency to levy a tax on cowsas a way to curb methaneproduction. The resolution saidthe plan “appears to beoutrageous.”
 From staff reports
Wilson County jail overcrowded, costing county
bag on the back of thebleachers in his honor.“It’s like he’s there with all the other seniors,”she said. “He’s there inspirit, and they knowthat.”The March 11opening game was aspecial night for Graden’sparents, Lisa Woodardand Jeff Gaines, as well, who shared the openingpitch for the new
eld andnew season with MJHSPrincipal Mel Brown.Singer Ken Mellons sangthe National Anthem.“It was just such amoving night for so manypeople,” Trotter said. “Theparents have done andunbelievable job – they’veput in a lot of hours anddedicated a lot of timeto that
eld and theseboys. I just think that inthese times of such badnews everywhere, andeveryone’s so worriedabout so much, it’s nice toknow that there’s people who still remember agreat kid who meant somuch to people and holdhim in their hearts. I likeknowing that this season’sdedicated to Graden, andthat these boys remembertheir friend, and misshim.”
