2008 Junior High School/Middle SchoolUtah State Chess Championships
West High ELP and Salt Lake Arts Academy: School Champs Jeremy Troff and Tony Chen: Individual Co-Champs 
For the eighth straight year, West High School’s Extended Learning Program captured theUtah State Junior High School Chess Championship (grades 6-9), large-school division, with24.0 points. Bonneville Junior High (19.5 points) and Bennion (17.0 points) took second andthird. West players also took or shared the top spot in each individual grade they entered.In the small-school division, the Salt Lake Arts Academy took first place (19.5 points),followed by Dixon (15.0 points) and Rowland Hall-St. Mark’s (14.5 points).Jeremy Troff and Tony Chen (West) were overall tournament Co-Champions (6.5 points),with Jeremy Troff winning on tie-breaks. Davis Unruh (Whittier), Eliza McIntosh (West), andMichael Thompson (Rowland Hall-St. Mark’s) tied for third (6.0 points).Approximately 153 players from 24 schools participated in the 7-round, 2-day tournamentheld at the University of Utah, March 13-14. Javier Pinedo of Rowland Hall-St. Mark’s served(once again!) as tournament director, as well as the 2008 President of the Utah Junior High StateChess Association (UJHSCA).
