Pre‐construction testing under Ministerial Directi on number A024/E2438 on t he site in 2006
identified a penannular s haped ditch with an assoc iated charcoal filled pit . Full
archaeological excavation was conducted on the sit e during 2006. A penannul ar ring‐ditch
some 4 m in diameter was excavated. This had a sma ll gap to the south and c ontained
cremated human remains an d three beads. Other exca vated features included a charcoal‐rich
pit to the east of the pe nannular ring‐ditch; a sm all tree bole to the sout h; and a natural
depression to the north. A single piece of chipped chert was recovered from the site but this
was not associated with a ny features. The penannul ar ring‐ditch, cremated b one and three
beads have been dated to the second century BC, an d this type of feature is consistent with
Iron Age burial practices .
