The Asthma Management Handbook 2002 cont ains
many updates reflecting the constant evolution of
management philosophy, t echniques and knowledge.
This is par t icular ly evident in our under st anding of t he
special issues of ast hma management in childr en, t he
impor tance of dose titration of inhaled cor ticosteroids

using object ive measurement s where possible, and the emer ging role of long-acting beta agonists and combination medications.

This edition retains the for mat familiar to reader s of
previous edit ions. However, t here have been some
changes. As t he t reat ment of ast hma in children differ s
in impor tant ways to that of adults, this edition
cont ains a new paediat r ic ast hma management
section that dr aws together the management advice
and treatment protocols for children. We hope this
will make this infor mation more accessible for reader s.
In the practical information section, patient information
sheet s have not been included, as t her e ar e ot her
sources of comprehensive, reputable information for

people wit h ast hma. However, t hey st ill appear on t he National Asthma Council website in a printable form. A detailed list of patient education resources and

where t o access t hem is included in t his edit ion.

As has always been emphasised, t heAst hm a
Management Handbookis not a textbook on asthma.
It is a pr act ical guide t o pr act ising clinicians, communit y
phar macist s and ot her healt h professionals t o assist

t hem in t heir management of people wit h ast hma. It is a resource t hat has been produced aft er wide consultation with interested organisations and

individuals, including t hose most eminent in t heir field. And it s recommendat ions are based on t he most up-to-date evidence available, through the

1999 Evidence-Based Review of the Australian Six Step
Asthma Management Plan(Coughlan J,W ilsonA,

Gibson P, NSW Health 2000), subsequent Cochrane reviews and ot her met a-analyses. W here evidence is lacking, the consensus opinion of Austr alian exper ts has been incor por ated.

We would like to thank all those individuals and
