Background

The main aim of this report is to present the main results of the pilotsurvey promoted and organised by the Network of Indian Male sexworker (NIMSW) country secretariat PLUS on the migratory patternsand behavior of male sex workers within and across the Indiancultural, social and geographical space. Starting from theacknowledgement of the relevance of migration and mobility tounderstand sex-workers’ life trajectories the pilot survey was designedso as to analyses in greater detail the relation between mobility andsex work with reference to three main migratory flows
:
Migration of sex-workers from rural to urban areas
Migration of sex-workers from other countries in thesubcontinent an others countries into India
Migration of sex-workers from the A4 cities/mega cities withinIndiaMore specifically, the main aims of the survey were:
To explore and document the migration phenomena,
To identify factors which influence migration of male sex workersand their entry into sex work,
To identify specific problems and cultural challenges for migrantmale sex workers.

Analysis

As the pilot survey was an attempt to address the relationshipbetween mobility and sex-work both at a broader national and at amore regional level, the results will be presented in a way that willhighlight the specificity of the condition of ‘migrant’ male sex workersin comparison with the rest of the observed population. For the sake of clarity and given the ‘pilot’ nature of the research, in this report weconsidered ‘migrant male sex workers’ merely all those whose locationof origin is different from the one in which they work, live and wereinterviewed. For the purpose of the report, the analysis will focus on the migration-specific sections of the questionnaire, addressing the legal statuswithin the current location and country of residence (we
interviewed non Indian sex worker who are from the subcontinent and otherscountries
), the time and the reasons for leaving home, thecountries/cities/
places
passed along the way, etc. All along the report, data regarding the non-migrant population will be compared withthose regarding migrant sex workers, in order for the specificity of theregime of social inclusion or exclusion associated to both conditions toemerge more clearly.

First of all, as far as the way people were contacted is concerned, fromthe analysis of the

data it emerges that 87 per cent of migrants wereknown to the projects before the interview took place against 78 percent of the non-migrant population. This, together with the fact thatnearly 70 per cent of migrants were contacted while they attended theservices offered or in the context of outreach programme run by theorganizations involved against 53.2 per cent of the non-migrantpopulation, might suggest that migrants tend to rely more on thoseservices that their non-migrants colleagues. As far as age is concerned, in general, both migrant and non-migrantsex workers tend to be between the age of 24 and 27 and very minordifferences between the two groups were also encountered as far asthe age they first had sex with a man is concerned, which is mostrecurrently between the age of 12and 16 for both groups. However, migrant sex workers on the average first got paid for sex with a manslightly later than non-migrant sex workers.
