According tothe common testimony of the SynopticalGospels Jesus opened his public ministryin Galilee with the announcement, thatthe kingdom was at hand, Matt. iv. 17 ;Mk. i. 15 ; Lk. iv. 43. In the last mentioned passage he even declares that themain purpose of his mission consists inthe preaching of the good tidings of thekingdom of God. And not only does2 The Kingdom and the Chiirchthe conception thus stand significantly atthe beginning of our Lord s work, itreappears at the culminating points of his teaching, as in the beatitudes of theSermon on the Mount and in the kingdom-parables. Its importance will bestbe felt by considering that the comingof the kingdom is the great event whichJesus connects with his appearance andactivity, and that consequently in histeaching, which was so closely dependenton his working, this event must also havea corresponding prominence.If this be true from Jesus own standpoint, it is no less true from the standpoint of his disciples. In their lifelikewise the kingdom of God forms thesupreme object of pursuit, and therefore of necessity the theme about whichbefore all other things they need careful instruction.
