With the supportof advanced technology,high precision drugs andintensive patientmonitoring, a city hospitalis successfully performing‘Fast Track CardiacSurgeries’ and dischargingpatients in a span of fivedays.Doctors at BillrothHospitals, who have beenperforming this fast tracksurgery, which allowspatient to be on their feetwithin four days after acardiac surgery, claim 99per cent success. In thelast two and a half years,the hospital has donearound 500 such surgeries,“said Dr K Nedumaran,cardiac anesthesiologistand intensivist, BillrothHospital.In this system, thepatient will be shifted to theICU immediately after thesurgery and a doctor whohad performed the surgerywill be there to take care ofthe patient at the ICU also.“Hence, there is continuity.There is no requirement ofa new team at the ICU topick up the details of thesurgery and proceed asthe doctor can guidethem,” he added.The next day,the patient will be movedto the ward, where he cantake juice and other foodprescribed by the doctor.On the third day, he willbe asked to walk aroundand climb the stairs. Thenext day, an observationwill be done to find outhow the patient respondsand on the fifth day he willbe asked to take a bathand the doctors willcheck the wound.Patients whohave undergone thissurgery are also happy.“Initially I was scared. Butit got over in five days,”said a much relaxedMarzook. Another patientSundararajan said thatthe cost of surgery wasvery less. Dr Nedumaransaid that the surgery, as apackage of seven days,costs Rs 1.15 lakh.

It canbe an analysis, surveyreport or a study. Theproject must be endorsedby the principal orheadmaster of theschool.The projectsmay be submitted by thestudents individually oras a team. Students cansubmit their project inphysics, chemistry,biology, mathematics,social science andinformation technologyor computer science.Best three projects ineach discipline will bepresented the award.
