TORQUE CONVERTER
A three element torque converter is used for allapplications (Fig. 1). Converter elements consist of theturbine, stator and impeller. The converter also con-tains an overrunning clutch and a converter clutchmechanism. The converter clutch is an electronically controlledmechanism. The clutch provides reduced engine speedand greater fuel economy when engaged. Clutch en-gagement also provides reduced transmission fluidtemperatures. The converter clutch is engaged in fourth gear and inthird gear when the overdrive control switch is in theOFF position. The overrunning clutch is mounted in the stator hub. This one-way clutch prevents the stator from rotatingin a direction opposite to engine rotation. This retainsthe torque multiplication feature of the converter. The torque converter is not a serviceable component. It should be replaced as an assembly when: diagnosisindicates a malfunction has occurred, or when a majormalfunction allows debris to enter the converter.
GEAR RATIOS
Forward Gear ratios for the 42RE transmission are:
•
First gear = 2.74:1
•
Second gear = 1.54:1
•
Third gear = 1.00:1
•
Fourth gear = 0.69:1.
RECOMMENDED FLUID
The only fluid recommended for the 42RE transmis-sion is Mopar ATF Plus, type 7176. Do not use DexronII except in an emergency or if ATF Plus is notavailable.
TRANSMISSION IDENTIFICATION
The transmission part/identification numbers andcodes are stamped on the left side of the case just abovethe oil pan gasket surface (Fig. 2).The first letter/number group is the assembly partnumber. The next number group the transmissionbuild date. The last number group is the transmissionserial number. Refer to this information when orderingreplacement parts.
FRONT BAND ADJUSTMENT
The front band adjustment for 42RE transmissions isconsiderably different from prior 4-speed models. On 42RE transmissions, the front band is
backedoff 3-5/8 turns
after tightening the adjusting screw tospecified torque.Refer to the front band adjustment procedure in theIn-vehicle Service section when band adjustment isnecessary.
ELECTRONIC GOVERNOR COMPONENTS
Governor pressure is developed and controlled elec-tronically in the 42RE transmission. Components usedfor development and control of governor pressure in-clude:
•
governor body
•
new design valve body transfer plate
•
governor pressure solenoid valve
•
governor pressure sensor
•
fluid temperature thermister
•
transmission speed sensor
•
throttle position sensor
•
transmission control module (TCM)
Governor Pressure Solenoid Valve
The solenoid valve generates the governor pressureneeded for upshifts and downshifts. It is an electro-hydraulic device and is located in the governor body onthe valve body transfer plate (Fig. 3).The inlet side of the solenoid valve is exposed tonormal transmission line pressure. The outlet side of the valve leads to the valve body governor circuit. The solenoid valve regulates line pressure to producegovernor pressure. The average current supplied to thesolenoid controls governor pressure. One amp currentproduces zero kPa/psi governor pressure. Zero ampssets the maximum governor pressure. The transmission control module (TCM) supplieselectrical power to the solenoid valve. Operating volt-age is 12 volts (DC) and is provided through the batteryterminal on the module. The solenoid is polarity sensitive. The TCM ener-gizes the solenoid by grounding it through the powerground terminal on the transmission control module.
Governor Pressure Sensor
The governor pressure sensor measures output pres-sure of the governor pressure solenoid valve (Fig. 4).
