Exercises 1.1
1

Find all prime numbers less than 100.

List all the factors or divisors of 30 and of 48. Hence nd all common factors. What
is the GCD?

List all multiples of 30 and of 48 up to 500. Hence nd the common multiples.

What is the LCM?

By using factor trees, decompose the following numbers into their prime factorisations.
(a) 144

(b) 196

(c) 200

(d) 275

Find the LCM and GCD of each pair of numbers from exercise 4 above.

What is the smallest common denominator you could choose to do

The proper factors of a number n are all the factors of the n except for n itself. For
example, the factors of 6 are 1,2,3 and 6 ... but the proper factors of 6 are just 1,2
and 3. A number is called perfect if it is the sum of its proper factors. For example,
6 is a perfect number since 6=1+2+3. Perfect numbers are quite rare. Show that 28
is a perfect number. (If you ever nd an odd perfect number let me know ... it will
make me famous!)
