There are several events that will help launch the students into this inquiry based project and increase student engagement:1.We will have a newspaper reporter come talk to the students about gathering and analyzing facts and information.2.Students will also be taken on a field trip to Berea College to learn from professors and students how they preserve and presentinformation in their Appalachian museum. They will also show the students how cultural pieces are recreated throughengineering, science, and music labs. Finally, the students will hear about the importance and the meaning of a community fromthe students and staff at Berea.3.The 6
th
grade will also go on a simulation hike/day where they will experience what it would have been like to live in Appalachiaas a settler. On this day they will also experience recreations of Appalachian music, folktales, and sports.
