:Abstract

A method is described for reducing atmospheric or globalwarming resulting from the presence of heat-trapping gasesin the atmosphere, i.e., from the greenhouse effect. Suchgases are relatively transparent to sunshine, but absorbstrongly the long-wavelength infrared radiation released bythe earth. The method incudes the step of seeding the layerof heat-trapping gases in the atmosphere with particles ofmaterials characterized by wavelength-dependentemissivity. Such materials include Welsbach materials andthe oxides of metals which have high emissivity (and thuslow reflectivities) in the visible and 8-12 micron infraredwavelength regions.
