Brethren Family and Friends …This month there are several dates that are of great importance to all of us asMasons and family men. First there is
St. Valentine’s Day
, February 14
th
, whenwe all pause to remember our ladies and express our HEARTFELT thanks andappreciation for all that they do to make our lives happier and richer by theirsupport. Don’t forget to say “Thank You!” in a meaningful way to our wives andmothers and sisters and daughters and especially the surviving spouses of ourBrother Masons.Back when I was a youngster, we used to observe Brother
George Washington’sBirthday
on February 22
nd
and
Abraham Lincoln’s Birthday
on February 12
th.
They were two separate holidays … each deserving this very specialrecognition in appreciation of what they meant individually in the developmentof our great nation. Nowadays, there is a collective President’s Day Holidaytied in with a long weekend and celebrated this year on Monday, February 16
th
.Unfortunately, I really think something has been lost in this combinedobservance. Too many just take it as a day off, without remembering theunderlying reason we have to celebrate. Therefore I am asking that we all stop and think of just where we would be if itwere not for these two very special forefathers. Our great leaders during the American Revolution, so many of them Brother Masons, truly our foundingfathers, were led by our Brother and first President George Washington. Thisis true of Lincoln as well. Even though we have no proof of any Masonic ties,Lincoln espoused so many of our Masonic virtues … especially Brotherhood andall it stands for. Please enjoy these holidays with your loved ones, but observe their specialsignificance and meaning to us as Freemasons.Fraternally,EDWARD G. GILBERTGrand Master
