There seems to be more entertainment award showsthan ever. I “googled” it and here are a few: PeopleChoice Awards, Critics Choice Awards, Golden GlobeAwards, Screen Actor Guilds, Director Guilds, Grammy,Academy. And there are more. It is amazing the talent andcreativity God has allowed people to acquire. Yet if we’re giving out awards I would have to beginright here at Eastmont. Of course this is not likeHollywood’s effort to congratulate themselves. The workwe do here is to honor Christ and you are the mostunselfish, dedicated, sacrificial and gifted peopleanywhere. At the close of each month I review all the ministrieswe completed. Every time! Every time, I am astonished atyour faithfulness. The list is amazing. Greeters, teachers, musicians, children workers, bus drivers, yard workers, visitors, singing, praying, givers, helpers, phone calling, food service, nursery workers and a whole lot more. Ihave to tell you I am one of the most blessed pastorsanywhere to have a congregation like you. By the way, some of these people have blessed you too. Why notaward them by praying for them today.Fred Craddock was in a grocery store looking forpeanut butter. Fred was 70 years old and a retiredDisciples of Christ minister. He could not find the peanutbutter so he decided to ask for help. Here is whathappened.
“Uh, Miss could you direct me to the peanut butter?”
She jerked around, stared at me and said,
“Are you tryingto hit on me?”
“I’m just looking for peanut butter.”
So I slowly backed away and found a stock boy and askedhim.
“Aisle five, way down on the left.”
He instructed. Iwent down aisle five and found the big jars of peanutbutter. I took one. As I turned to leave, that woman wasstanding there and she said,
“You really were looking forpeanut butter!”
“I told you I was looking forpeanut butter!”
She paused and said
“Well, nowadaysyou can’t be too careful.”
And I said
“Lady, yes you can. Yes you can.”
Caution and wisdom are important. Yet we canbecome so cautious we never venture out of our comfortzone to reach and help others. You can’t steal second baseand keep your foot on first. And you can’t reach aneighbor you never bother to meet. I want to thank youfor being a church willing to try new things in order toreach the lost. A ship in the harbor is safe from a storm, but it can still rot and rust. Plus the best fishing is in thedeep where the waves are bigger. Thanks for being achurch that takes prayerfully, calculated risks.
