Todd:
Now, also your country is really famous for having different regions, correct? You have threemain regions?
Anja:
We have four.
Todd:
four?
Anja:
Actually.
Todd:
Could you talk aboutthem?
Anja:
Yes, we have four regions and this actuallyconcerns the languages, which we have four officiallanguages. It's German,French, Italian, andRomange. And actually, thelast one, Romange, itbecame an official language just like twelve years ago,and only a little part theSwiss population can speakRomange, actually, but it just sort of became anational, an official languagesome years ago. And yeah, well, the country's reallysmall and we sometimeshave some troublescommunicating to eachother, but usually people talkat least two languages, so itworks out most of the time.
Todd:
So, in your country, you don't have the oneuniform language thateverybody speaks?
Anja:
No, we don't. Like wehave Swiss, but Swiss isonly being used in theGerman speaking part of Switzerland, which meanslike we don't actually useGerman when we talk. It'sonly for writing, but when wetalk to each other, to our parents, to our teachers, weuse Swiss.
Todd:
So Swiss is closest toGerman? It's Germanic?
Anja:
Yes, you can say thatbut it's very difficult for German people tounderstand us when we'retalking actually because it'sreally fast and a really cutelanguage, apparently. Yes.
Todd:
Now, what is thepercentage breakdown, likewhat percentage is French,Italian, etc?
Anja:
I couldn't tell you thepercentage but the biggestpart is German, followed byFrench, Italian, andRomange is only zero pointfive percent of thepopulation, so.
Todd:
Alright, and just out of curiosity, Romange, whatdoes that sound like? Doesthat sound like Italian or?
Anja:
It's a mix of the threemain languages I would say, like a mix of German,French, and Italian and, Ican catch a word here or there but, yeah, I don't reallyunderstand it.
Todd:
And lastly, what partare you from in Switzerland?
Anja:
I'm from the Germanpart.
Todd:
OK.
Anja:
Yes.
Todd:
Oh, thanks Anja.
Anja:
Oh, you're welcome.
