New York Road Rage: Keep Cool, Keep Safe
Anyone, even the calmest of drivers, can be subject to road rage. When a driver lets irritation andaggression behind the wheel take control of his or her rational thought, that driver develops the propensity for road rage.There is a difference between road rage and aggressive driving, however; aggressive drivingusually involves the violation of a traffic safety law, while road rage escalates to the point of  breaking a criminal law. Road rage occurs when an otherwise rational person loses control of hisor her thoughts and becomes a danger behind the wheel. Some signs of road rage include:
verbal assaults
, such as cursing, yelling, excessively honking your horn or makingobscene gestures;
unsafe driving behavior
, such as cutting-off another vehicle, tailgating, or blockinganother vehicle from using a lane;
particularly unsafe behaviors include
 pursuing or chasing another vehicle,running it off the road, or deliberately ramming or nudging it; and
stopping a vehicle on the side of the road
, and getting out to threaten, frighten, attack,fight, or hurt any other person.Both aggressive driving and road rage can affect a person’s blood pressure and ability to makedecisions; behind the wheel, that means you’ll make more errors and increase the likelihood thatyou’ll be involved in a car accident. Though New York State requires all licensed drivers to takea DMV-approved accident-prevention course, many drivers don’t know when road rage isaffecting their ability to drive.
How to Recognize Road Rage, and how to Prevent It
Aggressive driving becomesroad ragewhen a driver threatens, causes, or attempts to cause physical damage to another driver. Signs that you (or another driver) are becoming aggressiveinclude:
speeding, which could lead to following too closely;
frequently and abruptly changing lanes without signaling;
improperly passing another motorist;
failing to keep right;
 passing a stopped school bus; or Many aggressive drivers don’t respect other drivers’ right-of-way. Even if you have the right-of-way, it’s a good idea to give it up in order to avoid a crash. Keep your pride in check to avoidaggressive driving and falling victim to road rage. Try practicing these tactics:
allow yourself plenty of time to reach your destination;
if possible, alter your schedule to avoid driving during times of peak traffic;
call ahead to tell people if you’re running late (to help you relax);
