EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITY PART-TIME SUMMER PLANNING INTERN (Unpaid) FLEXIBLE DAYTIME HOURS

FILING DEADLINE: Open until filled. DESCRIPTION: The internship is within the Community Development Department at the City of Laguna Hills. The Community Development Department provides planning, code enforcement, building and safety, and receptionist functions for the City and is organized into two divisions: Planning and Building & Safety. The internship would be within the Planning Division. PRIMARY FUNCTION: Under general supervision of planning staff, the position will assist in performing a number of planning-related tasks. The successful candidate will gain experience in the basic functions of the Planning Division through observing and conducting simple plan-checks, interaction with the public at the planning counter, and a variety of research and clerical duties. The primary task for this position will be to organize and update the departments Center Files (a physical file for each commercial center within the City). This task will involve research in the Citys physical and electronic archives as well as site visits to obtain updated photos and tenant lists. Other technical level tasks may be assigned as required. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Applicant must be currently pursuing an undergraduate or graduate degree in Urban Planning, Public Administration, or a related field. Completion of at least one year preferred (3 quarters or 2 semesters). Excellent organizational skills and the ability to carry out tasks in a satisfactory manner with minimal oversight. Ability to communicate clearly, both orally and in writing. Ability to read and understand planning-related staff reports and approvals and basic plan drawings (site plan, floor plan, and elevations).

Compensation: This is a volunteer internship position. College credit may be available through your school. Physical Demands and Working Conditions: Light work: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to communicate with others, use a telephone, and work on a personal computer. The incumbent is required to travel, is occasionally required to handle or feel objects, tools, or controls, and reach with hands and arms. This position may occasionally lift or move objects up to 25 pounds. Licenses Required: Must possess and maintain a valid California Drivers License and Proof of Insurance. Tools and Equipment: Ability to operate motorized vehicles, cellular and regular telephone, calculator, computer, copy and fax machines, and other modern office equipment as necessary.
