 LETTER TO THE EDITOR
TO ALL THE BR SCHOOL COMMUNITY MEMBERS:
 It is school budget time!!!
This school year will soon be ending and preparations for the2013-2014 are in motion. The Board of Education and District Administrators are openingthe doors for public involvement in the processes of building a strong, sensible and educationally sound school budget. This is anopportunity for all of us to voice our ideas, strategies, and concernsto listening leaders. The Community Forums are an avenue for positive open communication between all groups that dedicate their time, strengths, and educational commitment to the students andfamilies of BRCS. This includes YOU! We as a school communityshould no longer “step back” from ways to be involved andsupportive in the management of “the second home” our studentsreside in, but rather “step up” with ways we can each promote, support and communicate positive ideas to keep our school homerunning on steady ground. Now with a new and open Administration and a Board of Education that continues to work hard for the betterment of thisDistrict, it is time for all of us to “Step Up and Step Out” by attendingthe upcoming community forums set for Tuesday, April 16th @7:00pm at the Richburg Cafeteria and again on Thursday, April 25th@ 7:00pm at the Bolivar Cafeteria. This is a new day...a new year where we are offered ways to beinformed, involved and supportive that will continue to create apositive powerful school environment. Our kids deserve it! We allhave a voice just waiting to be heard, so.... here is your opportunity. Attend one or both forums, ask questions, give suggestions and be a“voice” ( In the good times as well as the difficult times) I will attendand I hope you will find time to be there too!

Pet owners should remember that insideof a car can quickly reach 120 degrees in warm weather andshould not leave their animals in the car, even during shorttrips. This can quickly lead to heat stroke. The signs of heatstroke include:

Heavy panting and being unable to calm down, evenwhen lying down.

The pet’s gums may be brick red, they may have a fastpulse rate, or they may not be able to get up. If someone suspects their pet has a heat stroke, theyshould take the pet’s temperature rectally. If the temperatureis above 105 degrees Fahrenheit, they should cool the animaldown. The easiest way to do this is by using the water hose.Stop cooling the animal when the temperature reaches 103degrees. Bring the pet to the veterinarian immediately as heatstroke can lead to severe organ dysfunction and damage. Open door and windows can be hazardous to a pet. Theanimal may try to go outside, increasing the risk of fallingfrom windows or being hit by a vehicle. Some plants andflowers can be hazardous. For instance, many lilies are verypoisonous to cats. Visit the ASPCA Poison Control web site tofind out which plants and flowers are poisonous to animals. If someone thinks their animal is ill or may have ingested apoisonous substance, they should contact their veterinarian.Courses are available at many Red Cross chapters on howto care for your pet. The Red Cross has also developed DogFirst Aid and Cat First Ad Guides with DVDs that teach basicresponsibilities like spaying/neutering and giving medications,to performing CPR and preparing for disasters. Contact 1800- REDCROSS to see when classes are available.Pet owners can follow these important steps to help keeptheir pet healthy:

Give pets plenty of exercise.

Make sure they have plenty of fresh, cool water.

Make sure they get regular yearly checkups withtheir veterinarian, and are up to date on vaccines, especiallyrabies.

Get pets spayed or neutered.

Keep dogs on leashes outside-another animal may betoo much temptation

Know how to perform CPR and provide basic firstaid until veterinary care is available. Don’t forget to include pets in planning for emergencies inyour home or neighborhood:

Make plans to take your pets with you if you have toevacuate.

Most Red Cross shelters cannot accept pets becauseof health and safety concerns and other considerations. Knowwhich friends, relatives, hotels, boarding facilities will acceptpets in an emergency.

Assemble an easy-to-carry kit with emergencysupplies for pets: o Leashes, harnesses and/or carriers o Food, drinking water, bowls, manual can openers o Medications and copies of medical records o Current photos of the pets Pet First Aid Awareness Month is a great time for people tolearn how to protect their pet and keep them healthy.  ALLEGANY COUNTY OFFICE FOR THE AGINGMEALS ON WHEELS AND LUNCHEON CENTER MENUS & ACTIVITIESFor reservations call: 585-268-9390 by 2pm on the previousday.
