Corporate responsibilty report 2008

Cautionary note with regard to“orward-looking statements
Some statements in this corporate responsibility report are “orward-lookingstatements”. By their nature, orward-looking statements involve risk anduncertainty because they relate to events and depend on circumstances thatwill occur in the uture. These orward-looking statements involve known andunknown risks, uncertainties and other actors that are outside o TNT’s controland impossible to predict and may cause actual results to dier materially romany uture results expressed or implied. These orward-looking statements arebased on current expectations, estimates, orecasts, analyses and projectionsabout TNT corporate responsibility perormance and TNT management’sbelies and assumptions about the uture.
Scope o TNT’s 2008 corporateresponsibility reporting
For a ull description o the scope o this report and the assurance obtainedplease reer to chapter 11 ‘Scope o the report’.In summary this report covers the period rom 1 January 2008 to 31 December 2008 with TNT obtaining its corporate responsibility (CR) data rom internalmeasurement and rom external sources (third parties). The data is gathered using a questionnaire. All gures are based accordingly on the inormation provided by the Mail division, Express division, Innight (Other networks) and Group Head Oce (GHO). Figures are presented in a relativeway (using percentages and ratios) to make it possible or readers to monitor andmeasure progress year on year, unless the reporting protocol requires absolutegures to be disclosed. Figures related to CO

emissions are all extrapolated torefect the whole organisation, unless stated otherwise. TNT denes coverageas the number o ull time equivalents (FTEs) working in entities that report datadivided by the total number o FTEs per division. The data clarication table inAnnex 3 shows the coverage per indicator. TNT has taken all reasonable steps to ensure that the inormation in this report is accurate. This report includes only data rom entities that are ully-owned or majority-owned and rom those joint ventures where TNT has a controlling interest withrespect to corporate responsibility. For subcontractors, this report covers only road trac atal accidents, as well as absolute subcontractor CO

emissions, which are estimated. Whenever the report reers to the ‘major acquisitions’, this relates to theacquisitions o ARC India Private Ltd (Speedage) in 2006, and Huayu HengyeLogistics Company Limited (Hoau) and Expresso Mercúrio S.A. (Mercúrio),both o which were acquired in 2007.TNT has engaged PricewaterhouseCoopers Accountants N.V. (PwC) toprovide reasonable assurance on certain metrics and limited assurance on other metrics. This assurance work is perormed in accordance with the AssuranceStandard 3410N “Assurance Engagements Relating to Sustainability Reports”as drawn up by the proessional body o Dutch Accountants (Royal NIVRA)and in line with the 2003 AA1000 Assurance Standard (AA1000 AS) in so ar as the AA1000 AS goes beyond the requirements o Assurance Standard 3410N.Although the major acquisitions are included in the reporting scope o 2008,unless stated otherwise, the reported data rom these major acquisitions areexcluded rom PwC’s assurance scope. Owing to the recent acquisition dates, these entities are not yet suciently aligned to TNT’s systems. Obtainingassurance at this stage would thereore be unrealistic.Data marked with a triangle (
) have been audited. Audit work ocuses onobtaining reasonable assurance, substantiated by sucient supporting evidence.Limited assurance (obtained through review work) does not require exhaustivegathering o evidence and thereore provides a lower level o assurance thanaudit work.
