ex vitro: outer glass

the smell of something burning but sources unknown

EXT- schoolyard

elementary school kids playing in the school yard for after lunch recess. idyllic youth.

view of the kids through a car window.

Caitlin watching through the car window. She is in her mid-20's and sweetly dressed. From the shot, you can see the leather seatsand the smart interior frame- it's an expensive if understated car- perhaps an Audi.

Her left hand briefly caresses/thumbs the right hand of the driver, sleeved in a crisp shirt annd jacket as it manuvers the stick shift.

View of the driver, Joshua, from the back/profile. He's slowing down and turning into their destination

JOSHUA

Relax, please. You're going to be fine.

Caitlin smiles at him and turns back towards the window.

INT- agent's office

Office at Children's Home Society- inviting space of winodws, light, books on childhood development, and kids' kitsch- like the principal's office of a private elementary school. Social worker pulls up Cailtin & Joshua's file

SOCIAL WORKER

Gimme just a second here... Find where we left out. How are you doing?

CAITLIN

Good. A lot less nervous.

JOSHUA

Thanks for seeing us again. I feel much better with the DC deal behind me.

SOCIAL WORKER

Oh no problem. These things often take a couple days. How did it go?

JOSHUA

Well, we can afford you now--

CAITLIN

--not that we couldn't before

SOCIAL WORKER

You know that affluence is not required for an adoption. We are simply lookingat your financial responsibility.

JOSHUA

Of course. But the bonus will safely cover our upfront costs. The rest we can put in the college fund. Or I know you've been jonesing to shop for the nursery.

Cailtin blushes/beems in modest joy. Social Worker smiles.

SOCIAL WORKER

Not that it exactly matters here, but how did you two meet?

CAITLIN

Well, it's nothing special.

JOSHUA

At a party--

Cut to Party. Dance club. Joshua reclined on a seat, his back to the bar, surveying. He picks out Caitlin, who is beginningcontinually swept up by different dance partners away from her friends. With each new partner, the dance is off. Out of rhythm, incompatible sizes, perhaps one dancer is too forward for her obvious modesty. The last attempt throws her off kilter and the near fall embarrases her. She excuses herself and gingerly wanders to the bar.

JOSHUA

Is it twisted?

CAITLIN

Oh, I dunno. I don't want to risk it anymore.

JOSHUA

Can I get some ice? Let's see it-- up here

He wraps a couple ice cubes in a bar napkin, gestures for her leg before gently hoisting it onto his lap and running the bundlearound the ankle.

CAITLIN

Oh you don't need to--ooo

JOSHUA

Good?

CAITLIN

Thanks

JOSHUA

Want a drink?

CAITLIN

Ha, well this is an interesting way to a pick up line.

JOSHUA

I don't need a pick up line when I've already picked you up.

CAITLIN
 giggles

Something light. I'll clearly can't handle drinking & dancing.

JOSHUA

Chardonnay. You know you aren’t that bad. You just need to give up and trust
your partner more.

CAITLIN

What? I think I gave up more than enough.

JOSHUA

No. You didn’t trust your partner so he didn’t know how to handle your
momentum. But him-- I get it. Next time.

pause. Cailtin’s pride is both bruised and challenged.

CAITLIN

Are you giving dancing lessons?

JOSHUA

Are you asking?

CAITLIN

 No.

Joshua puts Caitlin’s leg down.

JOSHUA

Up. Come on.

CAITLIN

My ankle-

JOSHUA

-is fine.

CAITLIN

But-

JOSHUA
bringing her up & onto dance floor.

I’ve got you. We’ll start slow. Come here. Trust me, I dare you.

Slowly, they dance. He guides her through a backbend, letting her give up more control as they progress.
