Phillips, who was operating the crane, and another man who wasinside the basket, weresubcontractors installingsiding at the church which has undergone anexpansion.Wilson CountySheriff Terry Ashe said thebasket, the platform of which was made of wood, was“too wide for the distancebetween the building and thepower line. It was a terribletragedy.”He said the platform was about 10 feet wide, andalthough the
fl
ooring was wood, the railing around it was metal. The fact that the

edman inside the basket.Phillips wasoperating the crane, movingthe lift into place, whenit came into contact withthe power line, sending thecurrent down the arm of thelift to where he was sittingand then to a back tire tothe ground. Ashe said thesurge of electricity blew outthe back tire of the lift.“It was a lot of voltagein a split-second time,”the sheriff said, adding heunderstood the line wascarrying about 14,000 volts.Emergency person-nel at Wilson EmergencyManagement Agency Sta-tion 5, located next door tothe church, heard a coupleof loud bangs and then thepower went out. They lookedoutside immediately, sawPhillips on the ground andran to him to render assis-tance.WEMA personnelreportedly had to wait a fewminutes to check on the man who was inside the basketbecause they were unsure if the power line was still hot.Middle Tennessee ElectricMembership Corporation was called to the scene tocut the power. The man insidethe basket was not hurt, but Ashe noted he “wasextremely shaken” and was15-20 feet in the air in the lift when the incident occurred.“I’m sure it was ahorrifying experience,” thesheriff added.
