Learn how Eletrobrás Termonuclear generates greater operational resilience. Eletronuclear runs its SAP database on System z, supported by IBM DB2 on z/OS. The company chose IBM System z9 Business Class servers for the database workload, both for the very high transaction throughput capabilities and for the security and reliability features – essential in the nuclear industry. Data is stored on IBM System Storage DS8000 family devices, with data backup to an IBM TotalStorage 3494 Tape Library. For more information on IBM System z, visit http://ibm.co/PNo9Cb.

Eletrobrás Termonuclear generates greater operational resilience
Overview
The need
For saety and security reasons, Braziliannuclear power generator EletrobrásTermonuclear wanted to enhancesystems resilience and improveoperational efciency.
The solution
Eletrobrás implemented IBM® z/OS®version 1.13 including the z/OSManagement Facility and FlashCopy®unctionality alongside IBM DB2® version9, supporting SAP applications hostedon x86-architecture servers.
The beneft
z/OS Management Facility simplifesadministration tasks and improvesbusiness efciency; z/OS 1.13 is highlyavailable, sae and easy to manage;FlashCopy cuts data backup time toeectively zero.
Eletrobrás, the largest generator and supplier o electricity in Latin America, is majority-owned by the Brazilian ederal government andgenerates some 37 percent o the country’s power supply. Eletrobrás isactive throughout Latin America and in several Arican countries, generates around 40,000 MW and operates 60,000 km o transmissionlines. Subsidiary Eletrobrás Termonuclear SA (operating as Eletronuclear)operates two nuclear power plants in Brazil, and is building a third. Withnational plans to build nuclear power plants across the country,Eletronuclear is set to expand signicantly.Eletronuclear runs its SAP database on System z®, supported by IBM DB2 on z/OS. The company chose IBM System z9® BusinessClass servers or the database workload, both or the very high transactionthroughput capabilities and or the security and reliability eatures –essential in the nuclear industry. Data is stored on IBM SystemStorage DS8000 amily devices, with data backup to an IBM TotalStorage3494 Tape Library. For data security and system resilience, Eletronuclear was running daily backups, during which operations were suspended or around ve hours. To protect against system outage, Eletronuclear tested new sotwaredeployments on cloned copies o the production environment, a processthat took several days.

IBM Systems and Technology
“Cloning our production systems to deploy sotware previously took days. With z/OSMF it is much easier, and can becompleted in a matter o a ew hours. Though this is only an occasional requirement, this eature provides us with essentia system resilience. In thenuclear industry, this is a strong beneft.”
—Paulo César do Nascimento, Senior Support Analyst or z/OS and SAP, Eletronuclear
For saety and security reasons, Eletronuclear wanted to enhance systemsresilience and improve operational eciency. The company looked or ways to reduce the number o system outages and improve its technicaltesting capabilities. The aims were to complete tests more rapidly and torun tests without impact on the production systems. To do so,Eletronuclear introduced abilities such as production environment backup online and z/OSMF cloning. Working closely with IBM, Eletronuclear took the opportunity to jointhe IBM z/OS Early Support Program (ESP), upgrading to z/OS 1.13, which includes the groundbreaking z/OS Management Facility. Thecombination o the extended unctionality and enhanced systemproductivity eatures immediately addressed Eletronuclear’s needs orimproved system resilience and increased business productivity.
Browser-based management
IBM z/OS Management Facility (z/OSMF) provides a web-browserbased management console or z/OS, enabling more productive day-to-day operations and ease o administration. More than just a graphical userinterace, z/OSMF provides an intelligent management console to helpreduce the learning curve and improve productivity or management andconguration, with automated tasks, embedded active user assistance andsimplied operationsz/OSMF simplies the execution o new management tasks and enhancesexisting tasks, or example, providing accelerated sotware deployment through the rapid cloning o z/OS images. It includes powerul TCP/IPnetwork and security conguration, as well as z/OS and Linux workloadserver resource monitoring, all rom a single point o control. Additionally, z/OSMF Incident Log enables the team to identiy and solve problems rapidly and eciently by providing online accessto relevant documentation with ast and simple delivery to theIBM technical teams. Further detailed system indicators can be accessedusing z/OSMF, allowing support staf to optimize perormance rom within the single browser-based environment.

Paulo César do Nascimento, Senior Support Analyst or z/OS and SAP at Eletronuclear, reports, “z/OS with the integrated Management Facility provides a greatly simplied interace that has improved our productivity, and the underlying unctionality has had an immediate, positive efect onour capabilities.“Cloning our production systems to deploy sotware previously took days. With z/OSMF it is much easier, and can be completed in a matter o aew hours. Though this is only an occasional requirement, this eatureprovides us with essential system resilience. In the nuclear industry, this isa strong benet.”Similarly, z/OS ofers improved backup services through z/OS DataFacility Storage Management System services. Backup copies no longerneed to be directed to identical hard disks, and can be completed on any drive with sucient ree space, which optimizes use o available storageinvestments at Eletronuclear. The z/OS Data Facility Storage Management System also enables automated tape backup rom disk backup, reducing the manual workload or busy technical teams.“Integrated z/OS and DB2 FlashCopy is one o the main advantages o z/OS,” says Paulo César do Nascimento. “In the past, a ull backup o the database required ve hours o production downtime as we pausedthe database. We are trying out IBM DB2 version 9, which supports theFlashCopy eature o z/OS, and this enables a complete backup o the ulldatabase even during operations, a signicant productivity advantage.”Eletronuclear runs its database workload on special-purpose System zIntegrated Inormation Processors (zIIPs), which reduces the sotwarelicense costs by placing the processing workload on the most cost-ecient platorm.
Lower risk, higher productivity
As a nuclear power generator, Eletronuclear depends on total systemreliability and resilience. The enhancements available in z/OS provide theability to back up and clone systems signicantly aster than beore, greatly reducing business risk and increasing productivity.
