This is the first part of an article published in The Greek Australian VEMA (2013): 10/28-11/29, which addresses a macrohistory of ecclesial architecture culminating in the Holy Monastery of the Mother of God Pantanassa in Mangrove Mountain, NSW. Part 1 focuses on the architectural and symbolic antecedents of Pantanassa, which can mainly be discerned in the Byzantine motifs of the Church of Holy Wisdom (Hagia Sophia) in Constantinople (modern day Istanbul).
