The Louisiana Transportation ResearchCenter (LTRC) is a research, technologytransfer, and training center administered jointly by the Louisiana Departmentof Transportation and Development(DOTD) and Louisiana State University(LSU). LTRC provides a setting in whichthe thresholds of technology can beexplored and applied in practical ways.By merging the resources of DOTDand LSU, a versatile core of facilities andexpertise addresses the rapidly evolvingchallenges in the transportation
eld.In addition to its af
liation with LSU,LTRC participates fully with otheruniversities in Louisiana that house civilengineering programs (Louisiana TechUniversity, McNeese State University,Southern University, Tulane UniversityUniversity of Louisiana at Lafayette, andUniversity of New Orleans). By combin-ing their resources with those of DOTD,the center eliminates duplication of effort and provides a richer base of sup-port. The center also provides an avenuefor multi-disciplinary support fromuniversities to meet the practical andacademic needs of the transportationindustry in such areas as engineering, law, business and management, basic sciences, planning, and environmental studies.Since its creation by the Louisiana legis-lature in 1986, LTRC has gained nationalrecognition through its efforts to im-prove transportation systems in Loui-siana. The center conducts short-termand long-term research and providestechnical assistance, training, continu-ing education, technology transfer, andproblem-solving services to DOTDand the transportation community atlarge. The center is largely supportedthrough funding authorized by DOTDand the Federal Highway Administration(FHWA).LTRC merges the resources of the stateand local government, universities, andprivate industry to identify, develop, andimplement new technology to improvethe state’s transportation system. Byharnessing these valuable resources,LTRC is empowered to
nd innovativesolutions to Louisiana’s transportationproblems. To enhance the center as the focus fortransportation-related research, technol-ogy transfer, and education in Louisi-ana, the LTRC foundation, a non-pro
torganization, has been established. Thefoundation provides an excellent part-nership opportunity for DOTD, stateuniversities, and the private sector. In these and other ways, LTRC is pavingthe way for more ef
cient and bene
cialresearch and training, thanks to a com-bination of modern techniques, locallyavailable resources, and a wide pool of support. For additional information, contact
