International Media Visiting the Cayman Islandsto Support Their G-20 Coverage
Please be advised that a few international broadcast media have notified the PR Unit of their intention to arrive in the Cayman Islands this week and next, to prepare stories on theupcoming

April 2 G-20 Summit in London. The stated focus of these visits, initiated by the broadcast media involved, is to get reactionfrom the Cayman Islands on the G-20 agenda in relation to offshore financial centres (OFCs).To that end and as part of Government’s media policy towards international journalists, the PRUnit is assisting by coordinating Government statements about regulation, cooperation andtransparency of the Cayman Islands, as well as providing general backgroundinformation/orientation about the industry. There is the likelihood that some private sector offices may receive unscheduled visits from journalists accompanied by camera crews. We understand that private sector firms mustindividually decide whether or not to speak to media, and in that context, the PR Unit offers thefollowing guidelines to consider which may help avoid “surprise” or uncomfortable encounters:
Remain calm and pleasant.
Keep eye contact with the reporter. Do not look directly into the camera, especially whenspeaking.
Do not put your hands over your face or push away a camera. And do not in any waymake physically aggressive movements.
Some cameras may be concealed or recording even when you the interview has ended,so assume the camera is on at all times. Cameras may be small, home camcorder-typedevices or even mobile telephones.
Use bridging statements to respond to inquiries:
“We are not in a position to meet right now, but would be happy to take down your questions and get back to you with answers,”
which can then be provided in writing. It’s OK to repeat this sentiment – ideally, varyingthe phrasing:
“I’m not the best person for this topic but…”
If there are members of the private sector who wish to know more details about any on-islandinternational media opportunities, please contact the PR Unit (details below).
