It wasn’t exactly a dream delivery for any first-time
mother, but for Falen Joseph and her mother,
MAZDA6owner Jana Mallery, the events in the wee
hours of July 25, 2006, were certainly memorable.
It all started at 2:20 a.m. when Falen alerted her
mom that her water had broken—signaling her baby
was on its way. While Jana was
trying to calm her daughter’s
nerves, she was also loading her
MAZDA6and preparing for the
30-minute drive from her home in
St. Martinville, LA, to Women’s
and Children’s Hospital in
Lafayette.
“When we were on our way, I
told her just to breathe, that we
would make it to the hospital in
time, and please not to have the
baby in the car,” said Jana, a Child
Welfare Service Assistant for the
State of Louisiana.
Later, as she pulled onto the
road to the hospital, she noticed
Falen was very uncomfortable and
had laid a towel down on the floor.
Not a good sign.
“I asked if the baby was coming,
and she said ‘no,’ but she was
breathing hard,” recalled Jana. “I
told her to hang on, that we were
only two minutes away.”
After pulling into the hospital
emergency drive-up and not seeing anyone, Jana quick-
ly pulled the car around to the side of the hospital and
ran through the double-doors. Luckily, she found a
nurse, but the nurse directed her back to the main en-
trance where she had just come from.
“When I ran back to the car to pull it around, I heard
a baby crying,” she said. “I paused and said, ‘Falen,
what is that?’ but she was just laying back like nothing
was wrong. She said she caught the baby’s head during
delivery and placed him on the floor of the car.
“I was in shock,” she said. “I didn’t know whether to
talk to her, soothe the baby, or hop
in the car. I drove back to where I
had started from, pulled up to the
emergency room and told the
nurse that I no longer needed a
wheelchair—the baby had already
been delivered. The nurse ran back
into the hospital, called an emer-
gency code, and doctors and nurs-
es immediately flooded out of that
hospital to help.”
The baby boy, who was born
perfectly healthy at 2:55 a.m.,
weighed in at seven pounds and
was named Isaiah Israel Joseph.
But to Jana, he may always be
known by his nickname: “Speedy.”
Ironically, Jana was in a similar
situation just one week later, when
she had to drive her mom’s preg-
nant niece to the emergency room
for her baby’s delivery. Fortunately
in this case, they made it in plenty
of time, and the baby girl was
born in the hospital as planned.
“As Mazda Sales Consultants,
we always highlight the performance and versatility of
Mazda cars,” remarked Desiree Hebert, Sales Consul-
tant for Lafayette Mazda where Jana Mallery bought
her baby-mobile. “However, this experience gives these
concepts entirely new meaning.”■
