It was a tough year for kangaroos and el-ephants— not a single Emmy

nomination betweenthem. But the vulture made up for it, baggingtwo nominations on his own. Deciding the numberof nominees and winners in each Emmy

categorythis year was a bit reminiscent of touring the zoofor your Northern California NATAS chapter’sawards committee. It’s all part of a process called “blind scoring,” and it may be the fairest systemaround.

Here’s how blank scoring works. Allof our entries are shipped to otherNATAS chapters around the countrywhere they are judged by a minimumof six outstanding peer televisionprofessionals. As the scoresheets from each category are re-turned to the accounting firm of
Spalding & Company
in San Fran-cisco, the accountants tally thescores and assign the highest tennumbers in that category a generic, meaningless title, based on thetheme chosen for the year. Thisyear’s theme: animals. The first category named “ant,” the second “bat,” and so on, throughthe alphabet until “zebra. Then itstarts over again with “ape” and “bear” through “zygodactyl” (it’sallegedly a breed of dinosaur). Thisyear for the first time the Spanishlanguage entries were judged sepa-rately by Spanish speaking peer judges. When you add the 30 panelsof Spanish entries to the 63 catego-ries you have a total of 93 blindscores, so

some of the categorynames became pretty obscure, suchas “quahog,” ”ibex,” and “nilgai.” You’ll have to Google them on yourown to verify they’re real animals. When the awards committee metin early April to rank the scores, allthey ever saw were sheets of paperwith an animal name at the top and acolumn of numbers in descendingorder beneath. Committee memberssince none of us ever finds outwhich fictional category titlerepresents which category, but I’dbet the committee nominated allof the entries from either 24, orthe 22’s and above. And since thetop two scores are so high, and soclose, both would be awarded anEmmy
®
statue. The accountants than merge inthe Spanish panels. i.e. if alligatorand buffalo turned out to be thesame category in English andSpanish, each having two nomina-tions and one winner. On nomina-tion night the category will showfour nominations and on Emmy
®
night the category will have twowinners. For that reason, don’tbe surprised if there are moredual winners this year than you’veseen in previous years. This year’s record entries, 930yielded 257 nominations, 28%;607 nomination certificates werepresented to 406 individuals.Three of the 63 categories did notreceived nominations. We’ll all have to wait untilSaturday May 12th to learn thenames of the winners, but thereare some clear leaders already asfar as the number of nominationsgoes
.
In San Francisco,

KNTV (NBC 11
) received 38nominations, the most of anystation in our region.
KPIX (CBS5)
isn’t far behind, with 30. InSacramento,
KUVS (Univision19)
leads the pack with 11 nomi-

look at the numbers in each category, having no idea what category it really is, anddecide if any of the scores is high enough to war-rant a nomination, and if so, how many. In severalcategories, the committee’s answer was ”no.Ascore of 15 or 17 out of a possible 30 wouldn’tdo. In most categories, the grouping of highscores warranted anywhere from one to sevennominations. A “grouping” is a number of scores bunched at the top of a given category. Forexample, the category “lion. The two top scoresare 28.63 and 28.25, followed by 26.29, two in the25’s, a 24, two in the 22’s, a 20, and so on. Thecommittee reaches a concensus on wherethe break should be in this category fornominations. I have no idea what they decidednations, followed by
KXTV (ABC 10)
with nine. InFresno,
KFSN (ABC 30)
and
KSEE (NBC 24)
tiedwith six each. In Hawaii,
KGMB 9
scored well withseven nominations.
