HANUMAN – NO ORDINARY MONKEY
A Series of Retellings for Young People Inspired by Valmikis Ramayana
 by
Joshua M. Greene (Hofstra University)
EPISODE 1 – THE MONKEY KINGDOM
A Devoted Warrior

Hanuman was mischievousas a child, a brave warrior inhis youth, and a musician andscholar when he was older. Andor all eternity he is the symbolo devotion to his beloved LordRama. Hanuman looked out athis world through eyes shiningwith anticipation, with a hal-smile o amusement over hisown great abilities. We canimagine him walking out romhis Himalayan cave where, it issaid, he still lives—to scan thehorizon in search o his belovedLord, swaying gently, as i totell the world by his impatientmovements that however well weserve, however good we think weare, there is always more to do andthat lie’s greatest adventure is inthe doing.Hanuman happened to be amonkey. More precisely he was aVanara, or member o a monkey-like tribe o orest-dwellers. Mosto the time, according to reportsin India’s ancient texts, he was notconscious o how he looked. Hismonkey-like body was like armor to a soldier or robes to a priest: something useul but not more im-portant than that. As a celibate, he held no interest in making himsel attractive to the opposite sex.And as a student o scripture he understood the dierence between body and soul. His monkey-likenature suraced rom time to time, but those who seek to know him must move past the obvious, orhis story strikes at the core o human experience and at the very heart o sel-discovery.
