Lobbying activity concerning guns in the US Congress picked up after the Sandy Hook shooting. The biggest sums of money and time were spent pressing lawmakers to reject proposals to implement universal background checks, to reject renewal of the federal assualt weapons ban, and also to reject bans on high-capacity magazines. Pro-gun organizations like the NRA and Gun Owners of America massively outspent gun control advocates by a margin of 16 to 1. The gun industry, represented directly by Colt, Remington, Sig Sauer, and Advanced Armament, all manufacturers of assault rifles, ammunition makers Olin, Alliant Techsystems, and the gun industry's main trade association the National Shoorting Sports Foundation, outspent gun control advocates by almost 2 to 1.
