MAR27,200911:23P.M.  ThisisthelastsectiondealingwiththehistoryofEmpireCity.Ofallthe   historysections,this,Ithink,wastheweakest.Thereason,isthatIdid   nothavethewordsIneededtofleshitout.Also,Ireallywasnot  confidentenoughinmyselftotacklethethenstillrawemotionsfrom     9/11.PlusIhadthelimitsofwhatwasalreadyinthe
SAS    
rulebook.  Therewassomebackgroundinthere,butnotenoughtofullygroundthe   pseudocityinreality.   Afterthissection,wethenmoveintothedescriptionofeachofthefive    boroughs.  
PresentDay2000s   
NomatterwhattroublesEmpireCityfaced,shesurvivedthemall.Bythe   late1990s,thecityseemedreadyonceagaintoturnacorner.The   economywasflourishing,tourismwasup,andcrimewasdown.Hordes   ofyoungdot-comersandventurecapitalistsflockedtoSiliconAlley   seekingtocreateatechnologyboomrivalingallothers.Itwasatimeof   megamergerswhereNewEconomycompaniesboughtOldEconomy   corporationswithnothingmorethanstocknotices.EmpireCitywas    booming,butjustwheneverythingwasgoingwellthingschanged.  First,theeconomybeganslowing,andcompaniesworthmillionson   paperfoundtheyhadnomoneytostayinbusiness.Fuelingthiswas   dailynewsreportsoflargecorporationsriggingaccountssoboard   memberscouldmakelargerprofitsoffthebacksoftheirinvestors.  Companieswhofoundsoaringprofitsinthe90sfoundprofitsand   demandfortheirproductsfalling.Thisledtomassivejobcuts,anda   growingunemploymentrate.Alreadybruised,EmpireCitysufferedwhat  manythoughtwasthefatalblow.  September11,2001thesunwasshininginaclearbluesky.Itwasa   typicalTuesdaymorningandpeopleweremakingtheirwaytowork.  Thischangedat8:45AMwhenaplanecrashedintoTower1ofthe    WorldTradeCenter.Whilewitnesseswerestilltryingtocomprehend    whathappened,asecondplanecrashedintoTower2at9:03AM.Forthe   nexthour,EmpireCitytriedtocometotermswiththeevent,whilethe   citiesrealheroes(Firemen,Police,andParamedics)cametotherescue.   Withbothtowersburningtheyenteredwiththeonlythoughtofrescuing   asmanyastheycould.   At10:05AMthenextshockhitnotonlythecity,butawatchingworld,as   Tower2collapsedunderthestressoftheplane’swreckageandtheheat  fromthejetfuelfire.At10:28AMTower1collapsed,andEmpireCity’s   skylinewasforeverchanged.Laterthatdayat5:20PM7WorldTrade   Centercollapsedasacitytriedtoprocesswhathadhappened.Intheend   thedamagewasstaggering.  1WorldTradeCenter,2WorldTradeCenter,7WorldTradeCenter,5    WorldTradeCenter,andtheNorthBridgehadcollapsed.Partially   collapsedwere6WorldTradeCenter,theMarriottHotel,4WorldTrade   Center,andOneLibertyPlaza.Structuressufferingmajordamage   includedEastRiverSavingsBank,FederalBuilding,3WorldTrade   Center,St.NicholasChurch,90WestStreet,andBankersTrust.While   theMillenniumHilton,2WorldFinancialCenter,1WorldFinancial  Center,30WestBroadway,WinterGarden,andtheN.Y.Telephone   Buildingsufferedstructuraldamage.Intotaltheattackcaused$34    billioninpropertydamage,andthelossof13millionsquarefeetofoffice   space.   Ayearlater,thesiteclearedofrubbleitstandsasareminderofthe   attack.Thoughplansareunderwaytorebuild,thecityisonedge.  Terrorismisnowpartofherfabric,andnotadaygoesbythatmany    wonderwhenitwillhappenagain.Fromananthraxscarethatrocked   notonlyEmpireCity,butalsoWashington,DCinOctober2001,tothe   increasedamountofsecurityonbridges,intunnelsandinthetransit  system,thecityhaschanged.Evenwithallthetragedythecitysaw,  EmpireCitypushesforward.  Sincetheattackthecityonceagainfacesbudgetproblems.Thefederal  governmenthashelpedfundthecleanupandrebuilding,butcostsare   highandthecityisfindingithardtopayforitall.Addedtothisismany   companiesforcedtoimplementdeepjobcuts,makinganalreadybig   unemploymentproblem,bigger.Facedwithallthisthecurrentmayor,  MichaelBloomberg,hashadtodealwiththefallout.Thoughthecity   survived,andisslowlyrecovering,thewoundshavehealedandthecity   hasgrownstronger.  PostedinGamesTagged:EmpireCity,Games,LostWorks,thoughts
