Welcome to Iowa City!
Iowa City was the rst capita| of the
state of Iowa, before the capita| was
moved westward to Des Moines.
Considered a co||ege town, many
[obs are associated with the university
and its teaching hospita|. Other |arge
emp|oyers inc|ude educationa| service
companies ACT and Pearson. It is
wide|y recognized as one of the most
educated cities in the United States.
According to the U.S. Census Bureau,
Iowa City has a popu|ation of about
68,000 (2010}. The university has an
enro||ment of approximate|y 30,000
students. As such, the university has
a strong impact on the cu|ture of Iowa
City and impacts the community from
a variety of sources, inc|uding the
hospita| and various university teams
and programs.
A|so inuentia| in the community is the
university's Writer's Workshop, which
caused Iowa City to be named the third
UNESCO City of Literature, so far the
on|y such city in North America.
In 2008, Forbes Magazine named
Iowa City the second-best sma||
metropo|itan area for doing business in
the United States.
Culture
University
The University of Iowa's main
campus was origina||y designed
by architect D. E|wood Cook. The
campus is rough|y bordered by
Park Road and U.S. Highway 6 to
the north and Dubuque and Gi|bert
Streets to the east. The Iowa River
ows through the campus, dividing it
into west and east sides.
Of architectura| note is the Pentacrest
at the center of The University
of Iowa campus. The Pentacrest
comprises ve ma[or campus
bui|dings. O|d Capito|, Schaeffer
Ha||, MacLean Ha||, Macbride Ha||,
and Jessup Ha||. The O|d Capito|
was once the primary government
bui|ding for the state of Iowa, but it is
now a museum of Iowa history.

Pedestrian Mall
City P|aza (common|y ca||ed the
Pedestrian Ma|| or simp|y Ped Ma||}
serves as a gathering p|ace for
students, |oca|s, and the home|ess,
and draws |arge crowds for its
summertime events such as the
Friday Night Concert Series and the
annua| Iowa City Jazz Festiva| and
Iowa City Arts Festiva|. The Ped
Ma|| area contains restaurants, bars,
retai|, hote|s, and the Iowa City Pub|ic
Library. It is known for its appea| to
various |oca| artists and musicians, and
its wi|d bar scene.
Literature
Iowa City has a variety of cu|tura|
events. It has a strong |iterary history
and is the home of the Iowa Writers'
Workshop, whose graduates inc|ude
John Irving, F|annery O'Connor, T.C.
Boy|e, and many other prominent
American authors, and the nation's
|eading Non-Fiction Writing Program.
Events/Attractions
Iowa City a|so sponsors a variety of events
in the Summer of the Arts program. These
inc|ude a nationa||y renowned [azz festiva|,
a festiva| of the arts, open-air summer
movies and free concerts every Friday
night in the pedestrian ma||.
The Iowa Biennia| Exhibition began
in 2004 as an internationa| survey of
contemporary miniature printmaking he|d
its initia| exhibition at the University of
Iowa. The 2006 exhibition, received a 2007
"ICKY" award nomination in Visua| Arts
Programming from the Iowa Cu|tura|
Corridor A||iance for its exhibition at the
University of Iowa's Pro[ect Art Ga||ery.
In 2007 Land|ocked Fi|m Festiva| was
founded as an independent organization.
Summer of the Arts was one of severa|
sponsors. Many Land|ocked Fi|m
Festiva| events are he|d at the historic
Iowa City Eng|ert Theatre in downtown
Iowa City.
Iowa Hawkeye footba||, the University
of Iowa's Division I team, is a ma[or
draw for residents and visitors a|ike
during the fa|| season. Iowa's footba||
team p|ays its home games at Kinnick
Stadium, named after former Iowa
footba|| p|ayer Ni|e Kinnick who won the
Heisman Trophy in 1939.
The University of Iowa wrest|ing
program is one of the most successfu|
ath|etic programs in NCAA Division I.
Food
Hamburg Inn No. 2 is a favorite campaign
stop for po|itica| candidates. It has a|so
been a favored campaign stop for many
U.S. Presidents, inc|uding C|inton and
Reagan. It was featured in The New
York Times for its wide|y renowned "pie
shakes."
