Hinduism1Running head: HINDUISMHinduismMark Z GriggAxia College of the University of Phoenix

Hinduism2AbstractAs long as I can remember my father has always said to me, “remember who you are, andwho’s you are”. It was very important to him that we represented ourselves well and that werepresented him well. The underlying message there was also that God is always watching.Religion is like knowledge in that it can be used for both good and bad. A person can takereligion and better themselves or they can use it as a reason to disparage others. There are manyreligions in the world and it is important to remember that they are neither right or wrong, goodnor bad, merely tools used by humanity. All actions of religion fall on the shoulders of mankind.

Hinduism3HinduismIn the area around the Indian subcontinent there are many religions. Some of them wellorganized and structured. There is also a less organized religion referred to as Sanatana Dharma, commonly referred to by the western world as Hinduism (Fisher, 2005). I would like to cover what binds a religion of such little structure. It is important to understand that structure is a byproduct of religion and not the goal. The goal of religion is the liberation from earthlyexistence. While there are structured religions such as Buddhism from the same area geographicallyas Hinduism it is still important to understand that Hinduism is a major religion. What makes itunique is the fact that there are 330 million deities in India alone (Fisher, 2005). This seems tostrange to those from a monotheistic background. One could argue that so many variations would prevent it from being one religion. The belief in Hinduism is that the divine have countless faces. The extreme size and complexity of the religion has to do with the age of the religion. While noone is certain of the specific age of the religion documentation can be traced back to before 1500BCE by the Vedas and most of the epic scriptures were well established by 500 BCE (Fisher,2005). The variations in the religion and deities make it hard to organize into a structuredreligion such as Catholicism, which is known for its structure and control of the religionworldwide. All this being said there are a few key beliefs in Hinduism that I would like to make sureto touch on. One of the key beliefs is that of the law of karma. Western civilizations throw thisaround as a whimsical thing but to the Hindu religion it is a sacred belief. Hindu’s believe thatevery action or lack of action shape our future experiences in either a positive or negative way.The shaping of our lives by karma does not end in death but carries on in the next life.
