SPITFIRE Mk. Vb BL628
“Spitfire”
During the designing and building stages of the type224, Supermarine weredreaming up names forthe finished aircraft. SirRobert McLean, theChairman of Vickers(Aviation) Ltd decidedthat the name shouldsuggest something venomous and becauseSupermarine began withan “S”, he decided that sotoo should the fightersname. Out of a host of probable names, such asShrike and Shrew, camethe name Spitfire. Thecreator, Reginald Mitchell was none too impressed with name, citing “It’s just the sort of bloody silly name they wouldchoose.”
