The slender ilies and assertive daisies | plucked from my front yard required containers, and so my first vases were simple cylindars—pieces | could use in my kitchen and fil with flowers. But | soon began experimenting with forms and surfaces, producing vases that served the bouquets they held but also had identities oftheir ‘own when empty, A vase is typically thought of as an object that ‘enhances something —a tulip or a dinner setting. Yet the best vases transcend service and stand on their ‘own as art. Creating a vase that can speak for itself takes hard work and a definite vision, and that’s part ‘of what makes the form challenging and exciting, The vase's capacity for both function and decoration—a double identity of sorts—enriches its potential as a creative object. For contemporary potters, the vase is a source of enduring inspiration, because it can serve as a model for a wide range of techniques and ideas. I've seen wonderful vases with handles constructed over their tops to help support heavy flowers. She has participated in more than 30 solo exhibitions and 300 graup exhibitions. For nine years she taught ceramics at the School for American Crafts at the Rochester Institute of Technology in Rochester, New York. She lves in Missoula, Montana, where she is a Professor of Ceramics and chair of the School of Art at the University of Montana.
