The

old

preacher

Vance

Havner

told

about

a

church

that

thought

entirely

of

themselves.

“Us

 four,

no

more,

shut

the

door,”

was

their

unwritten

motto.

They

were

exclusive,

lazy,

and

non
caring

about

the

lost.

The

sign

in

front

of

their

church

read

“JESUS

ONLY”

One

night,

a

storm

came

through

and

ripped

off

the

first

three

letters.

It

then

read

“US

ONLY”

Too

many

churches

think

only

of

themselves,

their

needs,

their

convenience,

and

their

comfort.

If

not

careful

we

become

keepers

of

the

aquarium

rather

than

fishers

of

men.

In

a

few

weeks

we

will

recognize

and

congratulate

our

2013

graduates.

Most

of

them

had

 just

begun

school

when

9/11

occurred.

During

their

entire

life,

our

country

has

been

at

war.

They

have

been

living

in

one

of

the

worst

economic

decades

in

our

history.

This

past

year

alone

they

watched

reports

of

senseless

killing

in

Newtown

and

Boston.

Add

to

that

mix,

nuclear

threats

from

North

Korea,

possible

climate

change

and

near

miss

meteors,

it

would

be

easy

to

be

frightened

about

the

future.

Yet

your

generation

is

the

largest

and

most

educated

of

our

history.

You

have

more

potential

and

resources

at

your

disposal

than

any

prior

to

you.

Success

will

not

come

easy,

but

it

can

come.

Famous

singer,

Ray

Charles,

was

blind

by

age

seven.

He

could

have

sunk

into

apathy

and

lived

his

life

on

welfare.

But

his

mother

challenged

him.

“You’re

blind,

not

stupid.

You’ve

lost

your

eyes,

not

your

mind.”

She

had

him

scrub

floors,

sweep,

even

chop

wood.

Ray

said

“She

made

me

realize

that

I

could

 figure

out

a

way

to

do

things.”

Graduates,

Ray

Charles

had

no

more

control

over

his

blindness

than

you

do

over

our

economy,

but

you

do

have

control

over

your

response

to

it.

When

challenges

come

you

have

three

choices.

You

can

resign,

whine

or

shine.

You

cannot

direct

the

wind,

but

you

can

adjust

your

sails.

My

life

verse

is

“Be

steadfast,

unmovable

always,

abounding

in

the

work

of

the

Lord,

 for

your

work

is

not

in

vain.”

I

Corinthians

15:58

That’s

my

prayer

for

you.
