“If you scream, I’m going to kill you. And if you tell, I’m going to kill Bailey.” Said Mr. Freeman I could tell that he meant what he said…Then there was the pain. A breaking and entering wheneven the senses are torn apart. The act of rape on an eight-year-old body is a matter of theneedle giving because the camel can’t. The child gives, because the body can, and the mind of the violator cannot.

–Chapter 12, page 78, paragraph 4This section of the book was in chapter 12, and was a particularly disturbing scene. Inthis section of the chapter, Maya was raped by her step father, Mr. Freeman, and related in the book the fact that she was raped to a section of the bible (The act of rape on an eight-year-old body is a matter of the needle giving because the camel can’t). This segment was troubling because first of all, she was only an eight year old, and too young to understand what was reallygoing on. Secondly, she was too sweet of a girl for such a horrible and awful thing to happen toher. The most obvious and important reason for this scene being so wrong was that her own step-father was the one raping her. It was too sad that it was a member of her own family, and the factthat she was too young to understand what was going on means she’d keep the fact that she was being molested as a secret if Mr. Freeman asked for her to. As a result, no one would ever findout the horrible things that were happening to her.If you read the previous chapter as well, you would learn that this wasn’t the first timeMr. Freeman did something sexual with Maya. So you would expect these types of sexualactions would be coming a lot later in the book as well. Obviously this horrible act would takesome sort of toll on Maya’s life, and if you do some research, you’ll learn that she couldn’t speak
