Legal Momentum hasenjoyed a triumphant, if tumultuous year. We faced off against implacable right wing forces in Washington and wonvictories for women in theirbattles to overcome domesticviolence, end workplace dis-crimination, find jobs in fieldsthat once were reserved formen, maintain their right tomanage their own reproduc-tive lives, and, as immigrants,to live safe from the fears of violence and retribution. When times are tough, and the political landscape isadversarial, success sometimesmeans holding the line againstthreats that could reversehard-won gains. And some-times it means taking a calcu-lated risk in the face of daunt-ing odds. When circumstancesdictate, we achieve our goalsby advocating, by working in coalition, and by holding public officials accountable through media activism.Other times we do our best by taking a case to courtand going it alone. If there’s one thing we’ve learned in the past36 years, it is to adapt to change, to view the future asopportunity and the past as preparation. And so it has been this year as Legal Momentum’sleadership transferred from our much loved andrespected board chair of five years and board memberfor 10 years, Michele Coleman Mayes, to the new direction of Linda A. Willett, who joined LegalMomentum’s board in 2005. While Michele, Sr. Vice President and GeneralCounsel for Pitney Bowes, safely saw Legal Momentumthrough its name change and rebranding, and helpedus launch such bold new initiatives as our Equality Works program, opening doors in fields such asconstruction and firefighting, and our Family Initiativeprogram, advocating for early education and child care, she also developed a more diverse board and increasedour credibility and visibility within the corporate sector.Linda, Vice President and Deputy General Counselof Bristol-Myers Squibb, counts among her priorities“assessing the women’s rights issues of the 21st century, ensuring Legal Momentum is a leader in addressing those issues and engaging more women in supporting Legal Momentum and its mission.” We welcome the opportunity to serve underLinda’s leadership and we join with her in anticipating a year of unique opportunities, raised visibility, hard- won successes and the satisfaction of knowing we havedone our best for women.
