2327 June 27, 2012 Discuss how Davey Crockets legends and folklore add to his larger than life character. Like any Folklore this features elements that are embellished and may even be fictionalized. He speaks of his daughters stating I always had the praise o raisin the tallest and fastest and sassiest gals in all America. They can out-run, out jump, out-fight, and out-scream any critter in creation(Crockett 2279). The beginning of this passage is clearly embellished and serves to make the life of Davey Crocket much grander then it is. He goes on to state But the youngest o my darters takes arter me, and is of the regualar earthquake natur. Her bodys flint rock, her souls lightnin, her fist is a thunderbolt, and her teeth can out cut any steam-mill saw in creation(Crockett 2279). This is clearly something Crockett has embellished using flashy metaphors and images to exaggerate the talents of his daughter. One example seems to be out right fiction. At one point he discusses his infant daughter getting into a fight with a grizzly bear, upon wandering in the woods. He states, Jist as he war a-comin to her a second time, the little gal grinned sich a double streak o blue lightin into his mouth that it cooked the critter to death as quick as think. She brought him home for dinner(Crockett 2282). This is an example of a tall tale par excellence. In summation Crochet uses much exaggerated retellings of events in his make him into a larger than life character.
