To: Kim Powers <kpowers11@gmail.com>Creepy Portrait Tattoos:(this person really committed to their "Who's the Boss" joke)Hello one, two, three, and four of you (Numbers five and above, sorry, maybe next time) and welcomeback to another edition of Pop! Goes the Culture - your Friday treat that makes the day complete(http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wa6maT1hw68).I've enjoyed the response to last week's Pop! intro (mainly that no one thought I was a creeper) andone or two of you mentioned that not only does this happen via e-mail, but it tends to happen quite abit with cell phone numbers, or even home numbers. I've had the same cell phone number for almostseven years now and I still get people calling for Dennis. When Alissa and I first moved into our place way back when we used to receive calls for someonenamed "Veronica" and from what we could muster from missed called and answering machinemessages, Veronica was in a bit of financial trouble and those collectors were PISSED. to receive a gay man's monthly porn subscription, but, uh, I guess that's a different story...If anyone else have funny/interesting mistaken identity stories, I'd love to hear/share them in Pop!But for now, let's get started, shall we?

(pure enthusiasm right here)1) Pretend You're Happyhttp://www.myspace.com/scarsandbulletsWith twitter eclipsing facebook and facebook eclipsing myspace and Friendster a topic on "I Love the ____", it's hard to keep up with a bevy of social networking sites these days. Unfortunately that meansthat super-heavy flash/slow-loading myspace must take a backseat. And that includes all the random"check out my band" messages that come with it.

However, when going through my monthly myspace check this week I came across a message Ireceived from this band, Pretend You're Happy. And out of all the blind e-mails I've received frommyspace, this is by far the best band I've heard. In fact, I'm quite surprised they need to reach out topeople, when people should really be reaching out to this collective from Vermont. While not overly poppy and upbeat, there is something inherently happy about this music. Sweetmelodies, delicate vocals, and swirling instrumentation with just the right undertone of fuzz. I have afeeling they'd be a bit all over the place live, but that this band probably never gives the sameperformance twice.2) Hot Lavahttp://www.myspace.com/hotlavaepThe days following SXSW are like multiple Christmas Days. And I am the spoiled child who did not helpwrap any gifts by not attending SXSW and subjecting myself to grueling lines and schedules, but I willreap the benefits of shredding everyone's hard work wrapping and come away with great new bandsto check out.Long story short, Hot Lava from Richmond, Virginia are one such band. While I don't think they soundthat Hot Lava, they sound retro and lo-fi without sounding like they are directly ripping the "retro" and"lo-fi" sound.Track Listing:1. The Antlers - Sylvia2. Bearsuit - Muscle Belt3. Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros4. Hot Lava - Mummy Beach5. Hot Lava - Apple+Option+Fire6. James - Laid7. Kinetic Stereokids - Free Money8. The Magic Kids - Hey Boy9. Otis Redding - These Arms of Mine10. Pilar Diaz - Tu Y Yo11. Plants and Animals - Lola Who?12. Pretend You're Happy - The Other Side of the Earth13. Pretend You're Happy - Pretend You're Happy Must Die14. Sean Lennon - Dead Meat15. Those Dancing Days - Run Run16. YellowFever - Hellfire
