The cooled reaction gas is washed in a multistage absorption column with water (producing aqueous formaldehyde solution) or
with urea solution (producing stabilized urea-formaldehyde solution).

2) The product of the plant is taken out from the bottom of the column and sent to some daily tanks, to measure and titrate it.

3) The formaldehyde absorption heat is taken out from the column, cooling, in plate heat exchangers, the washing solutions with
cold water.

4) The formaldehyde free gas, coming out from the top of the column, is partially discharged into the atmosphere, and
partially recycled to the plant.

5) If required by the local rules, the exhaust gas may be catalytically treated before the outlet to the atmosphere, in order
to convert all the contained hydrocarbons (whenever minimal they are) to water and carbon dioxide: the reaction heat may be
recovered by producing steam.
