- (To submit that ) No proper assessment of any environmental
experts report by any of the competent departments of the
Greek Ministry of Environment has ever taken place. The
above can be substantiated by the correspondence I have
received so far by each of the competent departments of the
Greek Ministry of Environment.
- And his, not only with regard to the MARATHONAS LANDFILL
but also in relation to all the landfills that have been built
and/or are due to be built all over Greece.

LANDFILLS IN GREECE

According to the statistics of EUROSTAT, in year 2007,

Greece was ranked 23rd out of 27 EU Member States with
regard to the efficiency of waste management.
According to the same statistics for the year 2012, Greece
was ranked in the bottom of all the EU Member States.
This proves beyond any reasonable doubt that the Greek
waste management model, not only has failed to produce
any positive results, but also that the entire situation has
gone from 2007 onwards, from bad to worse. (Badly
aggravated).
- QUESTION:
Can I be considered a success?
Without doubt Greece has gone backwards. (Failure).

The European Audit Department for Portugal

Portugal:
According to statistics issued by the EUROSTAT, in 2007, Portugal was ranked 15h out
of the 27 EU Member States in relation to its efficiency of its waste management.
According to a more recent survey of 2012, Portugal was ranked 13th in relation to its
waste management. And at the same time, the European Audit Department by way of
the key Decision, No. 20/2012, seriously contests any attempt for funding of
infrastructure for elaboration of mixed waste.

Based on the suggestions of Mr Dimitrios Damaskos, BSc, MSc in Mechanical
Engineering, I have forwarded to the European Audit Department, the
financial-technical report of Mr Damaskos and have been awaiting a response
from them, which is not expected to be different from the Decision 20/2012 that
was referring to Portugal .

municipal authorities under the supervision and funding of the EU

Landfill of FILLI- Athens THE BIGGEST AND LARGEST LANDFILL IN EUROPE WITH
NEGATIVE RESULTS ECONOMIC, ENVIRONMENTAL AND WITH AN ADVERSE EFFECT
UPON THE LOCAL PEOPLES HEALTH.

INCREASE OF CANCER DEATH RATE ON THE INHABITANTS OF THE AREA- INCREASE
OF LEUCEMIA DEATH RATE, AND INCREASE OF DEATH RATES DUE TO CARDIAC,
CARDIOVASCULAR AND RESPIRATORY PROBLEMS CAUSED UPON THE INHABITANTS OF
THE AREA.

An awful lot of funds were given by the EU and were badly squandered. In particular, the
EU COMMISSION funded he construction of a factory for waste elaboration IN ANO LIOSIA,
ATTIKI, but due to the continuous fall of stones and rocks from the nearby hill, the factoty
collapsed and therefore, it never became operational.

through the landfill area causing significant pollution. THERE ARE
INDICATIONS THAT THE TOXIC LIQUIDS ENDED UP IN THE DRIED
OUT KORONEIA LAKE

3. - Landfill of West SAMOS

It was constructed on loose soil!!

But was legally and fully approved for construction by the Greek Authorities.
No profound mistake was ever reported by anybody involved at any stage of the design funding and
creation.

The name of the location is witch means in DESCENDING SOIL
Not even the name of the site created any research interest to the local and the EU responsibles

Landfill of WEST SAMOS ISLAND: The landfill was constructed on rotten soil,
based on a sham/misleading environmental report with profound errors, and as
a result, a significant pollution was caused to the entire area.

4. : Landfill of Lefkimi

LEFKIMI, CORFU ISLAND: A LANDFILL WAS CONSTRUCTED WITHOUT ANY APPROPRIATE SURVEY IN RELATION TO THE
COMPOSITION OF THE SOIL. AS A RESULT, WHEN THE CONSTRUCTION WAS IN PROGRESS, UNDER-SOIL WATER
SPRANG UP WITH AN ADVERSE EFFECT ON THE ECOLOGICAL BALANCE OF THE AREA, WHICH WILL BECOME EVIDENT,
AS SOON AS THE LANDFILL WILL BECOME OPERATIONAL.

(In this case, the construction of organized LANDFILLS have

been funded not only by the Greek but also by the other EU
taxpayers and the environmental pollution has also been
increased, eg, the landfills of MAVRORAHI, SAMOS, LEFKIMI
and FILIS).

Environmental Impact Report of the Environmental

I am addressing all the above matters to the representative of the EUROPEAN
ENVIRONMENTAL DEPARTMENT, AS FOLLOWS:
I)
It is clear that all the environmental impact reports, contain
profound errors, so, we would like to know what steps and/or actions have
been taken.
II)
In relation to GRAMMATIKO (MARATHON LANDFILL) AREA, the
report of the Environmental Inspectors of the Greek Ministry of
ENVIRONMENT has demonstrated that the landfill was designated and
constructed on streams, and above a seismic crack, something that is clearly
incompatible with the EU law. Besides, the Greek Authorities have imposed a
ban on any drilling surveys that were being carried out with a view to
discover what the under-soil of the area is made of.
QUESTION:
1/WHY ARE ALL THE ABOVE WORKS IN RELATION TO GRAMMATIKO
LANDFILL STILL ONGOING?
2/ WHY DOES G.D, ENVIRONMENT OF THE EU APPROVESTHIS EU FUNDING?
3/ WHY DOES THE G,D. ENVIRONMENT NOT DEMAND AT LEAST ONE
DRILLING. SURVEY TO BE CARRIED OUT?

There is an obvious impact on the sea, arisen out of human activities, in this area. (to be noted that the
forests of that area have never caught fire).
Here, the situation is similar to that of SKOURIES (HALKIDIKI), and is exclusively due to human
activities.

CONCLUSION:
The entire Greek waste management model is costly,
counterproductive AND IT CAUSES CONSIDERABLE
ENVIRONMENTAL POLLUTION.
IT IS EXACTLY WHAT IS DESCRIBED AS ILLEGAL AND OVERSIZED BY THE DECISION 20/2012 OF THE E.C.A.
THE ANSWER TO THAT MUST BE RE-CYCLING,AND
ALSO THE CONSTRUCTION OF SMALL AND EFFICIENT DECENTRALISED UNITS BASED ON SEPARATION OF THE SOURCE
UNDER Art.4 of Dir.98/2008 and acceleration of GOOD EUROPEAN
PRACTICES.
ALL THE ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT REPORTS/SURVEYS,
CONTAIN PROFOUND ERRORS AND THEY HAVE NEVER BEEN
ASSESSED BY THE RELEVANT GREEK AUTHORITIES OR BY GD
