INSTRUCCIONES Este examen deber ser presentado antes de las inscripciones por los alumnos que soliciten ingreso a cualquier carrera profesional. OBJETIVO DEL EXAMEN Este examen tiene como objetivo medir las habilidades de los solicitantes en el manejo del idioma ingls. METAS DEL PROGRAMA DE INGLS El programa tiene como meta cualitativa lograr que el alumno desarrolle las habilidades lingsticas necesarias para alcanzar el dominio del idioma ingls desde un nivel bsico hasta un nivel avanzado, lo que le permitir comunicarse efectivamente en forma oral y escrita en situaciones acadmicas. El programa tiene como meta cuantitativa que el alumno logre obtener al trmino de los cuatro cursos remediales un puntaje igual o superior a 470 puntos en el examen TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreing Language) y al trmino del Curso Sello de ingls un puntaje igual o superior a 520 puntos en dicho instrumento. Descripcin del Programa El programa consta de 5 cursos: cuatro a nivel remedial y un curso curricular considerado como Curso Sello dentro del plan de estudio de las carreras profesionales. El Curso Sello se presenta en tres modalidades dependiendo del nivel del alumno.

Cada curso tiene una duracin total de 80 horas, impartindose con una frecuencia de 5 horas por semana.

The Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) is a 2-Hours, 140 question test that is used as an entrance requirement for universities in Canada and the United States. The Basic TOEFL is divided into three parts: Listening Comprehension (fifty questions); Structure and Written Expression (forty questions) ; Reading Comprehension (fifty questions). The following is a description of the format of the basic TOEFL (Listening Comprehension, Structure and Written Expression, and reading Comprehension). OBJETIVO Y EJEMPLIFICACIN DE CADA TEMA I Listening Comprehension Time 35 minutes Listening Comprehension is the first section of the TOEFL. Here, you are required to answer questions of three different types. You listen to the questions only one time. The following is a description of the three different types divided in three parts. PART A Directions : In Part A you will hear short conversations between two people. After each conversation, you will hear a question about the conversation. The conversations and question will not be repeated. After you hear a question, read the four possible answers in your workbook and choose the best answer. Then, on your answer sheet, find the number of the question and fill in the space that corresponds to the letter of the answer you have chosen.

Listen to the example On the recording, you hear: (woman) I dont like this painting very much (man) Neither do I (narrator) What does the man mean? In your workbook you read: a) He doesnt like the painting either. b) He doesnt know how to paint. c) He doesnt have any paintings. d) He doesnt know what to do. Therefore, the correct choice is (a). PART B Directions : In this part of the Practice Test, you will hear longer conversations. After each conversation, you will hear several questions. The conversations and questions will not be repeated. PART C Directions : In this part of the Practice Test, you will hear several talks. After each talk, you will hear some questions. The talks and questions will not be repeated. After you hear a question, read the four possible answers in your workbook and choose the best answer. Then, on your answer sheet, find the number of the question and fill in the space that corresponds to the letter of the answer you have chosen. Here is an example: On the recording, you hear: (narrator) Listen to an instructor talk to his class about a television program.

II Structure and Written Expression Time 25 minutes This section is designed to measure your ability to recognize language that is appropiate for standard written English. There are two types of questions in this section, with special directions for each type. Directions: Questions 1-15 are incomplete sentences. Four words of phrases, marked (a), (b), (c), (d), are given beneath each sentence. You are to choose the one word phrase that best completes the sentence. Then, on your answer sheet, find the number of the problem and mark your answer. Example: For centuries, until the first Americans reached the moon, men speculated as to - - - - -. a) what did the satellites other side look like. b) what did the satellites other side looked like. c) What looked like the satellites other side. d) What like the satellites other side looked. In English, the sentence should read, For centuries, until the first Americans reached the moon, men speculated as to

what did the satellites other side looked like. Therefore, you should choose (b). Directions: In questions 16-40 each sentence has four words or phrases underlined. The four underlined parts of the sentence are marked (a), (b), (c), (d). You are to identify the one underlined word of phrase that should be corrected or rewritten. Then, on your answer sheet, find the number of the problem and mark your answer. Example: Sylvester Stallones starring role in a Rocky which he wrote himself, made he a nationally c b recognized figure virtually overnight . d Answer (c), the underlined pronoun he, would not be accepted in carefully written English; the form him should be used when a object pronoun is needed. To answer the problem correctly, you should choose (c). III Reading Comprehension Time 55 minutes Directions: In this section you will read several passages. Each one is followed by a number of questions about it. For questions 1-50, you are to choose the one best answer, (a), (b), (c), (d), to each question. Then, on your answer sheet, find the number of the question and fill in the space that corresponds to the letter of the answer you have chosen. Answer all questions about the information in a

passage on the basis of what is stated or implied in that passage. Read the following passage: The railroad was not the first institution to impose regularity on society, or to draw attention to the importance of precise timekeeping. For as long as merchants have set out their wares at daybreak and communal festivities have been celebrated, people have been in rough agreement with their neighbors as to the time of day.
