Dear Red Angus Enthusiasts,Well, the U.S. economy, recent election and all the world changes certainly make it difficult times to plan for the fu-ture . . . . but the future is coming, ready or not. Cattlemen and women are used to uncertainty and having to forgeahead even if times are tough. I firmly believe as you analyze the U.S. cattle industry that greater times are ahead if your operation can position yourself to have the right kind of cattle for the future. The right kind includes low main-tenance, easy fleshing cattle that will milk and have high maternal traits and then grade when they are har-vested. Many cattle operations across the country are turning to that right kind --
 Red Angus
! With the beef cowherd numbers their lowest since the 1950s, it makes sense to stay in the business and build females that will do themost things right that a cow can. The Sonstegard Red Angus program has been producing the right kind for decadesand continues to offer breed leading bulls that will build great females. It is an honor for me to be their auction-eer. Gary and the boys are great to work with and will help you market your Red Angus sired calves if you de-sire. The bulls will work in any program and in the rare instance they don't, the Sonstegards will back them with asuitable replacement or any necessary adjustment. I look forward to seeing you in Montevideo April 11th. If I can beof any assistance, please don't hesitate to give me a call.Best Regards,
 Kyle Gilchrist

Welcome from the Sonstegards

Welcome to our 5th Annual Red Angus Bull Sale. Our goal has always been to provide our customers with second to none geneticsand service, so they can make their operations more profitable. We feel the bulls we have to offer on this sale can do just that. Whether youare looking for calving ease, growth, carcass, or one that can do it all, we have bulls that can fit your needs. This year we started with a pen of 86 bulls. Of the 86 bulls in our pen we are only offering 63 yearlings, as we need bulls to use forbreeding in our commercial heifer program, and we need some to sell as 2 year olds next year. We have always tried to shoot for a 3 poundgain average on our bulls. Pushing the bulls too hard now can really hurt their performance for you in the future. The bulls have a 10 acre lotto roam and get exercise in. We feel the ration and exercise that the bulls get is essential to their development and helps promote soundnessand longevity. The bulls will be semen tested in the middle of March and all bulls will be guaranteed breeders. We also will ultrasound forcarcass at the end of March and the data will be available prior to the sale on our website. The bulls will have a complete vaccination pro-gram and will be ready for breeding come sale day. We certainly stand behind our cattle and guarantee your satisfaction with the bulls. We will be serving a free lunch prior to the sale starting at 11 a.m., so come early to view the bulls and eat on us! If you can’t attendthe sale and are interested in the bulls, call us or Kyle Gilchrist prior to the sale. We will have both DV Auction and a conference call line forthose of you who are unable to attend the sale, but you can also feel confident leaving bids with us or the ring men. We guarantee that youwill be satisfied with your purchases. The bulls are available for viewing anytime, just call to let us know you are coming. Also, consigningbulls to the sale is our long time friend and customer Rich Leiseth. He has 6 bulls on the sale and they have the 2RJL prefix. We hope to seeyou on April 11th.Thank you for all your support.Gary, Elaine, Tory, and Tyler Sonstegard (3SCC)

Suggested guidelines for successful Yearling bull management.
A little extra management on your yearling bulls can lead to better performance and longevity in your breeding program. When receivingyearling bulls at your ranch, keep them separate from older bulls, and feed them a maintenance ration of 3-5 lbs./head of grain and freechoice of hay. Reduce the amount of grain fed gradually, so bulls are on straight hay or grass two weeks prior to turning them out. Whenpossible try to limit bulls to a 45 to 60 days of pasture service their first year. After the season remove the bulls and put them in a sepa-rate pasture with plenty of good quality grass. It is best to feed yearling bulls separate from older bulls until after their second breedingseason. This allows them to achieve the growth and strength necessary to compete with older bulls for feed and space. Examine yourbulls after each breeding season checking for any injuries or inadequacies that may have occurred during breeding.
