Suggested guidelines for successful Yearling bull management.
A little extra management on your yearling bulls can lead to better performance and longevity in your breeding program. When receivingyearling bulls at your ranch, keep them separate from older bulls, and feed them a maintenance ration of 3-5 lbs./head of grain and freechoice of hay. Reduce the amount of grain fed gradually, so bulls are on straight hay or grass two weeks prior to turning them out. Whenpossible try to limit bulls to a 45 to 60 days of pasture service their first year. After the season remove the bulls and put them in a sepa-rate pasture with plenty of good quality grass. It is best to feed yearling bulls separate from older bulls until after their second breedingseason. This allows them to achieve the growth and strength necessary to compete with older bulls for feed and space. Examine yourbulls after each breeding season checking for any injuries or inadequacies that may have occurred during breeding.
