 Dissertation Title and Description
The Role of Inflammation in Leukemogenesis: Identifying Targets for Novel Therapeutic Strategies
Many studies have shown that inflammation leads to cell death in normal tissues. There is mountingevidence in most mammalian tissues that suggests inflammation promotes cancer formation. Our studiesfocus on differences between normal blood stem cells and leukemia stem cells. We have shown that acritical difference between leukemia stem cells and normal blood stem cells is in their response toinflammation. Characterizing this difference has led us to the discovery of novel anti-leukemiatherapeutic strategies that are able to specifically target leukemia stem cells while simultaneously protecting normal blood stem cells.
