God be with you. . .

When our days there were ended, we left and proceeded on our journey; and all of them, with wives and children, escorted us outside the city. There we knelt down on the beach and prayed and said farewell to one another. Then we went on board the ship, and they returned home. Acts 21:5-6 Luke paints a touching picture of community in the text above. He describes his parting with the beloved family of faith in Tyre as he and the group of journeying disciples of which he is a part move on in their return to Jerusalem. As they prepare to depart, their friends see them to the door, so to speak, and then they pray together and share their farewells with one another. It is a poignant moment. It is an experience we recognize. We, too, have recently faced a number of partings. The weeks since Easter have marked the great summer exodus from FHPC. Many from our family of faith, having found

their days here ended for this season, have made way for other places. Together, we have experienced a winter rich with shared experience of growing faith and deepening community. God has continued to bless and restore our church. And so we pray that those who depart have been shaped in meaningful ways by our fellowship and that what they have found here in their time amongst us goes with them even as we here treasure up all they have left with us. As we each those who go and those who remain carry our farewells in our hearts through these coming months, let us continue to pray for one another. Let us continue to pray that we will reflect what we have experienced of Christ in the time we were together into the community that surrounds us wherever that may be. God be with you till we meet again,

March 2013 was an excellent Income month, with both Pledges and Contributions surpassing Budget estimates. THANK YOU! The month was also aided by the calendar, with 5 Sundays in the month including Easter. Expenses for March were on target. Make Your Money Go Further

IRA Gifts to Charity Owners of Traditional Retirement Accounts (IRAs) must begin taking Required Minimum Distributions (RMDs) at the age of 70 & . Considering the large number of FHPC congregational members in that age group, Federal guidelines represent an opportunity to benefit both Church and donor via a tax break allowing participants to make tax-free transfers of any amount up to $100,000 from an IRA to a 501(c)(3) charitable organization. Called a Qualified Charitable Distribution (QCD), the distribution occurs by being directly conveyed to the charity from the IRA trustee (e.g.; Fidelity). Qualified Charitable Distributions from an IRA are not included in a taxpayers taxable income, and the taxpayer does not take a deduction for the charitable donation. Further, qualified distributions satisfy all or a portion of required minimum distribution obligations. Another benefit: because transferred funds are excluded from adjusted gross income, one is able to decrease the taxable portion of Social Security benefits. Interested parties are invited to contact fellow Church member John Wyman on how he and Barbara have used this feature in fulfilling their annual pledge obligation.

A mothers example
When I think of my mom, especially on Mothers Day, I recall a scene I witnessed many times during my childhood. Late at night, just before bedtime, my mother would sit in a rocking chair in the darkness with her head bowed in prayer. When it was nippy, the glow from the space heater revealed a lovely scene that fascinated me. My bed wasnt far away, and just before I fell asleep I often saw my mother praying. Her face was beautiful and aglow. She radiated holiness and serenity, and I was deeply affected. I never once talked to my mom about her prayer life. I was only 17 when she died. As traumatic as it was for me, I wonder if it werent a rather easy transition for her. After all, she seemed to live with one foot in heaven. Mother with a mission

Catherine Booth, wife of Salvation Army founder William Booth, was said to have read the Bible through eight times before age 12. In 1855, she married William, a Methodist minister, keeping the wedding simple so more money could go toward ministry. Breaking with tradition, Catherine became active in the church, speaking in meetings and giving public testimony. While raising eight children, she raised funds for her work, which included helping alcoholics get their lives on track. Upon her death, this Mother of the Salvation Army received high praise from her husband. To me she has been made of God, neverfailing sympathy, reliable wisdom and unvarnished truth, said William Booth. In short, all that is noble and good; and consequently a tower of strength, a mine of wealth, and an ever flowing fountain of comfort and joy. Mission Ministry
Extended Hand Food Bank
We continue to collect for this local project. In the month of March, we collected loose change totaling $117.50 for Pocketful of Hope. This money was given to the Food Bank along with the canned goods that is collected each week. This continues to be our biggest project to date. Along with the items we are donating, several of us have given our time to help them serve their Friday Night Fish Fry. On Friday April 5th; Nancy Wulfmeier, Susan Titus and her neighbor Joyce, as well as Terri Schmidt helped Extended Hands Food Bank. If this is something you feel you would like to help with, you can contact Susan or Terri. We help at the Fish Fry the first Friday of the month.

Mother Teresa As I think of this quote, I remind myself that even the smallest thing we do with love for our fellow human beings can be a monumental act in someone elses world. I have found a great feeling of love and self worth working on this Mission Ministry committee, all through the acts we have done and are doing for others. If you would like to join us on this committee, we meet every month on the second Monday in the Conference room at 4:00pm or contact Susan Owens or Terri Schmidt.

Vacation Bible School

We are excited to be involved with the Vacation Bible School this year. We will continue to ask the kids to bring in canned food each day for Extended Hands Food Bank. But our big Mission Project will be the Heifer Project. We will have the kids bring in loose change and we will chart their progress each day. This way they will be able to see what they can purchase as the money grows. They will learn each day what people in other countries need and how one small chicken or one sheep can affect their lives. This should be a fun way for the children to learn how to important mission work can be.

Changing Lives Center

In April, Susan Owens and Terri Schmidt took several things down to the Changing Lives Center in Phoenix, to help celebrate Easter. This is a place for Women and Children and is the counterpart of the Phoenix Rescue Center for Men. This is a program that helps young women get their lives back on track. It provides a clean and safe home for the women and children, as well as provides education for GEDs. They provide confidence for these young women and give them instruction on how to interview for jobs. They also provide spiritual guidance as well. If anyone would like to tour this facility or donate to this facility, you can contact Susan or Terri. This project is truly a worthy thing for us to contribute to whether it is money or gifts.

Other Projects
We are still coming up with other projects we will be introducing to you. We are eagerly looking forward to working with other local churches with some of these projects. We realize much can be accomplished with everyones help. As these projects come about, we will notify you. We here in the Mission Ministry want to take a moment and thank all who have been so generous with your money and time in our projects. We also want to thank all who continue to help Donna Sims with her Support Our Troops. This is such a huge project and a very important one to show support for our soldiers. Remember we also will collect used clothes for several worthy groups. If you have clothes to donate, you can bring them to the office and Marta will let us know, so we can disperse them.

One Great Hour of Sharing

This was the offering that was collected on Palm Sunday and Easter Sunday. We collected a total of $2,294.00 this year. This money has been turned over to the Presbyterian Disaster Assistance, to be used in disasters around the United States as well as foreign countries. Thank you to all who so generously contributed to this worthwhile cause.

Womens Choir on Gifts of Women Sunday

Gifts of Women Sunday on April 14th was the perfect way to wish everyone a beautiful summer. The special music was soul soothing. The animated musical Benediction was just a hint of the creative, sensitive and loving gifts our women share with our community. Rev. Martha Sadongei, pastor of the Central Presbyterian Church in Phoenix was historically informative and uplifting. As we move into summer it was truly a Gift. Thanks to everyone!

Our first Communion Sunday will be October 6th one service at 2:30 in the Independent Living Chapel with Stan Jones and at 3:30 in the Assisted Living Chapel with Tom Martin. May 15th, at 9:30 am at the home of Carol Fuls. Evelyn Hrunek will be co-hostess. We will discuss the PW womens reading list for next year and also ask for suggestions for summer reading from all present. Each attendee should come with a name (with author) of a book she recommends to the others. Bring books to share if desired. All women who enjoy reading are invited to attend. We will adjourn in time for those who desire to attend the Out and About luncheon.

the summer. Bob Berg and Tom Martin have been making regular runs from the StarBucks in Fountain Hills and Scottsdale to the Phoenix Rescue Mission, Andre House and Justa Center we are proud to now include Donna Sims or should I say she is inviting us on the regular runs and we will be dropping off food to MANNA in Phoenix. This is a homeless shelter that Donna supports and it stands for Marines, Army, Navy, National Guard, Air force. Keep up the great work! Volunteers and donations are welcome, call us. Two cars waited at a stoplight. When the light turned green, the first driver didnt notice. The woman behind him pounded her steering wheel and yelled. When the light turned yellow, she honked, made an obscene gesture and cursed. Hearing the commotion, the man looked up and accelerated through the intersection just as the light turned red. The woman ranted at missing her chance to get through. Suddenly, she heard a tap on her window and looked up to see a policeman. He told her to get out and place her hands on her car. The bewildered woman was hustled into the patrol car, booked at the station and placed in a cell. Eventually, the original officer returned and apologized for the mistake. I noticed your behavior, he said. Then I saw the Follow Me to Sunday School bumper sticker and the Christian fish emblem. Naturally, I assumed the car was stolen. Blessed Beginnings Ministry
Spring is here! Our activities keep us busy doing God's work, even if we will be winding down somewhat with summer nearly here. Do stop, check Carol Hencz, Elder out and join in any of our many functions. We welcome all who wish to participate. Here is what is going on at Fountain Hills Presbyterian Church. (formerly offered on Sunday Morning at 9:00 am) The former class study for this group has been replaced with our new Intergenerational Service which is being held from 11:15 - 12:15. We are offering Blessed Beginnings Ministry for ages infants - kindergarten if families choose not to keep younger ones with them or if a child needs extra attention. So far, we have been having between 2-4 little ones each Sunday. We will always offer more to provide a Christian ministry with children - even the babies. before splitting up at 6:30 pm for our classes. If you come for dinner we ask for a small donation of $5.00 per adults. (All children eat free). Come and join us for a real family gathering of food and knowledge. The Way, will have it's last day on May 22 and resume again on August 21.

Beth Moore Bible Study

Sylvia Burke wrapped up a 10-week bible study for Women on Monday, April 1, 2013. This study was called Living Beyond Yourself. This has been the second Beth Moore bible study Sylvia has led us through. If we have another Beth Moore Bible study, it is well worth your time to attend. Sylvia does a great job leading these studies.

Sabbath Day Bible Study

(formerly Pastors Bible study) Each week our church Calendar of Events includes what once was called the Pastor Bible Study. It is now called Sabbath Day Bible Study and has a change in leadership to permit Pastor Bill to conduct the Intergenerational Worship Home by Another Way. John Bivens has assumed the leadership role for this important church event. He meets with Pastor Bill each week as part of the preparation for this Bible Study, which meets in the Adult Center each Sunday from 10:30 until 11:30. Anyone interested in studying the Bible is encouraged to join others as we seek to learn more about the word of God. There is a special treat for Sabbath Day Bible Study participants during the month of May. John Bivens is taking a break and one of our new members has agreed to lead the study during the time John is away. Murray Jones will be leading the study of 1st, 2nd, and 3rd Letters of John. It promises to be an enlightening and wonderful learning experience for all who come. After greeting your friends and visitors to our church, please come downstairs to the Adult Center at 10:30 and join in the Sabbath Day Bible Study. We look forward to having you with us!

The Way (formerly Wednesday evening Family Night)

On Wednesday evenings, after dinner, Pastor Bill leads the adults in a one hour Bible study from 6:30 7:30p.m. Beginning in April and going through May 22. Pastor Bill has been leading a study of the PSALMS, uncovering the remarkable relevance of the Psalms to our contemporary lives. Meeting from 5 6pm, the Elementary kids (KidCommunity), this ministry has worship, music, traditions, storytelling, response and small group conversation and activity time. Their last Wednesday will be May 22 and will amp up again in August. Our teens will be meeting to prepare for serving VBS in June and for the Triennium in July. VBS is our largest all church event coming up. We are encouraging participation to make preparations light and fun. The more crew leaders of 3-5 kids of mixed ages we can train in June the more kids we can receive to hear how God helps us stand strong. Of course, we still have the 30 hour Famine to schedule with the mission and a social in the making! We all meet in the Fellowship Center at 6:00 pm for an evening meal and fellowship time

Mens Bible Study Summer Opportunities

Men of Fountain Hills Presbyterian Church and the community you have some summer opportunities! Recently the men who have been attending the Thursday morning Bible Study have discussed the dilemma we always face this time of year. What do we do about church activities and specifically the Mens Bible Study? A few of us take the entire summer off and travel somewhere else where the heat is less intense. Others take a shorter break for a vacation of a week or two. Some plan to spend the summer in Fountain Hills. So what do we do? But we enjoy the time together. We have decided to continue our Mens Bible Study each Thursday morning at 7:00 a.m. in the Adult Center. We may be few in number, but strong in will and the desire to openly discuss and learn from each other passages of the Bible and how Christs life and guidance can influence our own lives today. We are currently studying Acts. Men, why not take advantage of these summer opportunities and join in the fellowship and experience with a cup of coffee and a donut? You will be welcomed and glad you did. John Bivens

An Epic Adventure Awaits! June 17-21 from 9am Noon
VBS Training June 5 from 6-8:00 pm Get a taste of what VBS will be by seeing it in action! Pre-Registration is June 9th 10:15 11:15 am between worship services. Those who register on-line or at pre-registration Elementary kids will move through interactive learning stations in small intergenerational groups call Kingdom Crews. Dont worry, they still can make friend requests! Some of the stations are: Sing and Play Rock, Epic Bible Adventures, Imagination Station, Chadders Royal Theater, Missions, The Kings Kitchen, Tournament Games, and Fanfare Finale. God-Sightings: Kids and adults will watch every day for clues of how God is present, passionate and powerful. Kids will learn how to acknowledge that God has done something! Watch for the GodSightings Wall as it builds! kids! Better yet, be a Kingdom Crew Leader and experience it!

Preschoolers will have their own ageappropriate time at Pips Preschool Palace. They will join the others for opening, snack and closing. In fact, even the preschoolers will have a turn at preparing and serving the snack to the other children! Big Fun with Little People! The Winning Hand

There are times when our lives unfold like a game of cards. We all want the winning hand, but the odds say we will not always get it. For some, this is frustrating. And, like in the game of poker, we try to make other players believe we have something we dont. That is when gambling begins. Even with discipline and an understanding of risk versus reward, we can only win for a while before the odds beat us. God wants us to understand that, although we do not control how the cards are dealt, we can choose to enjoy the game. He wants us to take each hand we are dealtthe good ones and the bad onesand rely on Him to show us how to play them. Life is not about winning, but about the journey. Library Footnotes
The recent Book Shower at the Presbyterian Women Spring Gathering gave our church Library a big boost as we received some good books along with $300 to buy new books. These funds will be used to acquire books on the Presbyterian Women 2013-14 Reading List that we dont already have plus purchase other books that help provide balance to our total collection. The Library Committee thanks our donors not from just this event, but all the generous church members who have been contributing books and other media throughout the year. Barbara Oakeson ***************** One of the books on the 2013-14 Reading List is The Sisters of Sinai: How Two Lady Adventurers Discovered the Hidden Gospels by Janet Soskice. In 1892 Presbyterian Agnes Lewis and Margaret Gibson, identical twin sisters from Scotland, who had been left a large fortune by their deceased father, decided to travel to the Greek Orthodox monastery of Saint Catherine at Mount Sinai. Their adventure is an account of two ladies without university degrees, but with a passion for learning, who took a nine day camel ride to the monastery where they discovered the earliest known Syriad version of the four canonical Gospels. They translated them thus bringing a great Biblical treasure to world attention. This many faceted biography is not only about the physical story of their journey from Europe to the Middle East, it is also about a journey of the mind. They used their astonishing gift of languages, both modern and classic, to provide a great contribution to Biblical knowledge during an era when religious faith was under attack. Young Anatole decided to try something similar by placing a chair atop the kitchen table. His mother, however, wasnt a fan of his methods. Music Ministry
Have you ever noticed that the more blessed you realize you are, the more humble you become? I am surrounded by people of such fine character, strength, experience, wisdom and talent, that I just thank God, day after day for landing me in this church some 20 plus years ago. These folks in the music ministry portion of the church have proven time and time again to be the kind of person that God can touch. The endurance and stamina displayed by those involved with bringing music to the many services it takes when nurturing God's message to the soul is quite significant and so very appreciated. I am thankful you are people willing to be strengthened by God in order to be able to help Him build this church. "Home By Another Way" musicians are an amazing group to work with. We are able to play familiar, old, new, reverent and prayerful, bouncy, and encouraging pieces, usually all in one service. The style of worship allows families to bring their children, people who like to sing, people who need a bit more time to get to their car to drive to church. There are screens to see the same visuals we see in the 9:00 o'clock, and the sermon is always good! There is an opportunity to interweave music with scripture and reflection a few times over which can bring a connectivity to God's truth in such a unique style. There is freedom to chat with each other, learn about who each other is, and how each other is doing. It's a wonderful experience to look forward to each week. The Choir Fest, wow! Great job, Choir! You sang so well! The strength of each section when called upon to sing was right on! I felt so honored to lead you. Then there was this beautiful reception following made possible by the organization and team work of our Worship and Music Elders, Letha Neely and Helen Quigley, the good treats made by the choir along with the wonderful CLAF Team of Helen Roesch, Linda Warren, Chris Young, Jen Young, Marsha Brizzie, and Phyllis Burkett, whose faces we see Sunday after Sunday and many services in-between while serving others. I was so pleasantly surprised when I finally made my way in to see the spread, along with the beautiful daffodils provided by Marsha Brizzie properly placed on each table! There were over 400 people at this beautiful event, and every one of them left full, or, could have! What a feeling of support in what was a very important event to be privileged to host for our community. You ladies really did an amazing job! The afternoon's experience showed a remarkable display of both God's church in people, and the structure and acoustics of the Sanctuary itself. When all 250 voices came together at the end to sing Handel's "Hallelujah Chorus" to the

glory of God alone, it was an experience that filled every heart and soul in the building with vibrations of love and glory that told God how truly omnipotent we feel He is in our lives. Hence, the humbleness. On the same Sunday as the Choir Fest, we experienced the "Gifts of Women." I loved the gentleness that flowed from the beginning to the end, from the special music of our good friend Linda Covault to the sermon by Rev. Martha Sadongei, which brought attention to the gifts we all have, and respect of each other. God certainly needs us to recognize our gifts from Him that we might make better use of ourselves.

Spotlight . Did you know?

Barb & Bob Hegwood Bob and I were both born in small towns in Western Nebraska. I lived on the same farm until I went to college. Bob lived in several places in Western Nebraska. His mothers father and his dads grandfather both homesteaded in the late 1800s in Western Nebraska. We have lived in Fountain Hills as snowbirds since 1994. We are not members or associate members of this church, but you have welcomed us. We have six children, 7 grandchildren and 4 greatgrandsons. We have been married 62 years. We met in high school and went to the same Methodist Church. You asked what was the craziest thing we had ever done Bob says he has never done anything crazy!! Im not sure whether mine was crazy or just plain stupid. When I was a senior in high school, a group of friends skipped school one afternoon. We probably would have been OK but it was report card day, so we went back to school to get them and got expelled. You must remember there were 150 students in grades 9-12. It wasnt easy to get away with horse play. My first job was gathering the eggs and slopping the pigs on the farm. Bobs was delivering the newspaper. I dont think I had a favorite job. (Maybe I didnt like to work.) Bobs was working at Hirschfields Clothing in North Platte. He learned a lot and really liked his employer. Continued from page 17. The ladies choir was a confident display of voices singing a simple request, "Simple Gifts." I do thank you, ladies, for your blend of vocal and instrumental harmony. Well, now we just have regular church to look forward to. There will be a choir in the loft through May, then, our "Summer Music" begins in worship when you will hear music of soloists, duets, trio's, etc., filling the Sanctuary with the uniqueness of voice and heart. If you are interested in sharing, please contact me, or ask me about the list that goes around. To those of you who are leaving Fountain Hills, returning to your other homes and families, please know we will miss you, and we look forward to your return. My most interesting accomplishment was helping Bob start a printing business and to help make it successful. Bobs most interesting experience was selling the business after 26 years. He felt it was an ordeal. Working out all the factions and worrying about what would happen to our 300 employees, some had become like family members. We started with 2 employees on 1 shift and ended with 300 encompassing 3 shifts. Bobs life changing experience was selling our Printing Co. Mine was having 6 children. The best advice Bob ever received was start early and stay late. The advice I received was dont ask someone to do anything you wouldnt do. My parents had a big impact on my life. Bob had 2 employees that gave him lots of positive guidance. Hopefully we have been positive influences on our children and grandchildren. If I were to give advice today, it would be to be positive and forgiving. Bob says if asked to do something, you should put your heart into it and show great interest. We came to Fountain Hills Presbyterian Church by accident, but loved the music program and the members were loving and accepting. We just kept coming. We have enjoyed music under the direction of Barb Wyman, Al Roselieb and Debbie Fisher and the guidance from Pastors Glenn Atchinson, Gary Kush, Ewen Holmes, Paul Soderquist and, of course, Pastor Bill. We are blessed to be living in beautiful Fountain Hills and to have F.H. Presbyterian Church as our church home.

May 2013 Hospitalized? Call the church! If you are sick, hospitalized or home recovering from illness, we want you to call the church and let us know! In a congregation like ours where people leave in droves for extended summer months, it is easy for the staff, elders and deacons to assume, when we dont see someone, that they are simply vacationing away. The truth is that some of you are sick and we are not aware of it. You can help us by simply letting one of the staff know of your situation. We have an excellent support system in place due to the diligent efforts of our deacons. Help us serve you by communicating your situation.
