About Interhealth and NHS
Independent Sector Treatment Centre Programme, National Health Service, United Kingdom

Providing Clinical Excellence in Orthopaedic Care to the Cheshire Region In 2005, InterHealth Canada was awarded a major contract with the United Kingdom Department of Health after a major international competition. The scope of the project included the planning, financing, building, staffing, and operation of a new Orthopedic Hospital in Cheshire (which received its first patients in June 2006 and was officially opened by health minister Lord Warner in October 2006) and the provision of Orthopedic Consultants, Nurses, and other Clinical staff to a second existing facility in the West Midlands. The contract term was for 5 years. All hospital employees including administrative, medical, nursing, clinical and support were recruited by Interhealth Recruitment and were employed by InterHealth Canada's UK subsidiary, Interhealth Care Services (UK) Limited. One year after opening its doors the Treatment Centre had already seen 6000 out patient referrals from GPs in the area and had operated on 3500 patients. This had assisted Primary Care Trusts in Cheshire & Merseyside in ensuring that all patients were seen within Government waiting time targets. The one stop shop approach, whereby patients received all diagnostics interventions, for instance MRI or CT scan on the same day as their consultation, in addition to receiving a date for their operation, was one of the reasons for the Treatment Centres success. Patients appreciated this convenient option, which reduced their need to take time off work. Most patients were seen within 3 weeks of referral, and had an operation (if needed) within the following 6 weeks.
