Humboldt Republican Women Welcome
Dave Tyson
In 2011, the Eureka City Council heard a presentation by several citizensspeaking in favor of conducting a study to determine the feasibility of anEast-West rail route. This so-called “east-west” route, a rail line fromHumboldt Bay area to the Sacramento Valley (just below Red Blu), isnot a new idea, but one that was abandoned in favor of the north-southline when San Francisco needed lumber to help rebuild after the 1906earthquake and re. Within a few years, the eastern route was shelved, but not before the route was scouted and mapped. The City agreed to astudy to determine if that route might be feasible today.Dave Tyson was “the longest serving and most successful city manager inEureka's long and storied history.” His eorts to advance economicimprovement projects include the Eureka Boardwalk, the Fisherman'sTerminal and the Eureka Marina and Wharnger buildings. He hasn't stopped working to improve things and he’s here to ll us in onthe progress of the East/West Rail Feasibility Study. A few months ago,we heard from David Hull about the Humboldt Bay Harbor WorkingGroup (HBHWG), and their eorts to create job opportunities vis-à-visthe Humboldt Bay Harbor. These two eorts go hand-in-hand.The economic viability of the proposed rail lies in its use as a “landbridge” between the port and the national rail network. An estimatedtwo or three thousand living wage jobs could be created as a result of this endeavor. Is an East/West Rail feasible? How would it be funded? What would be hauled onthe trains? People?Goods? What about thenorth/south route?Bring your questionsas we welcomeDave Tyson.

On the lighter side, a story from Ronald Reagan:
A Republican was running for oce in a Democrat part of the country. He stopped at afarm in a rural area to do some campaigning and, when the farmer heard he was aRepublican, his jaw dropped and he said, "Wait right here while I go get Ma. She'snever seen a Republican before."So he got her and the candidate looked around for a podium to give his speech from, and the only thing he could nd was a pile of cow manure. So he got up on the mound and gave his speech and, at the end, the farmer said,"That's the rst time I've ever heard a Republican speech," and the candidate said,"That's the rst time I've ever given a Republican speech from a Democratic platform!"

First, I’d like to thank all of you who participated in one way or another and provided support for ourhighly successful Membership Tea at the grand Samoa Mansion. We had a delightful time enjoyingeach other’s company, eating a variety of savory oerings, and ogling the outts provided by BelleStarr for our fashion show. Over seventy ladies attended ; some renewed memberships while othersbecame rst-time members. Additionally, for those who were able to help with the plans for theparade, I say thank you. I know I speak for those in the parade when I say we had a great time andhope more of you will be able to join in the fun next year. Once again, I am totally impressed withthe heart of our organization.Humboldt Republican Women, Federated, holds a special position in Humboldt County. We have avoice that must be heard. Yes, we were disappointed more than words can say that our candidate lostthe presidential election. As I’m sure you understand, the past is the past, and it’s time to examinewhat went wrong, rectify the problems and stand up and be counted. We cannot stand on politicalrhetoric any longer but on creating policy. We have 2014 elections coming. In the past, we camealive three months before the election and wondered what happened when we lost. Now is the timeto get involved. It doesn’t matter if you have never been involved before. It does matter if you have a heart to becomeinvolved. We will work and learn together. Become a part of those who realize that there is anotherbattle on the horizon and we choose to ght to take our country back.Carol Hadley, President of the California Federation of Republican Women, stated, “Being courageousin politics many times takes us out of our comfort zones. Do I dare make phone calls, do I dare walkfor this candidate in this neighborhood, or can I actually talk to others I do not know…?” I encoun-tered these questions and all the emotions that went with them when I ran for public oce. I had noexperience in running for public oce, but I knew it was something I had to do. I put one foot infront of the other and went forward the best I could. Yes, I lost the race, but I learned a great deal. Avery wise friend said something very special to me. He said, “Annette, you didn’t lose; you just didn’twin the race.” It took me awhile to gure that comment out. Now that history is on my side, I realizethat it opened doors for me that wouldn’t have existed if I hadn’t had the courage to move inconviction and make the sacrices necessary, I wouldn’t be where I am today. As we expand ourborders, there’s no telling where these new paths will lead.So now I ask you: Are you happy with how things are unfolding in our community? County? State?Nation? If you are not, please consider how you can be a part of a revamped Republican Party, whether it is locally, statewide, or nationwide and jump in. Be part of the solution.Join me at our next meeting where we will welcome guest speaker David Tyson, who will share thelatest progress of the East/West Rail Feasibility Study. It’s exciting news!Warmest regards,
Conviction, Courage& Sacrice
